Finding the right Hardware: GeForce RTX 4060?

PostWed Mar 20, 2024 9:41 pm

Hi!

I'm cosidering to by a new PC to use it just for Davinci Resolve.
I found an offer on Amazon with a GeForce RTX 4060

https://www.amazon.de/HP-VICTUS-Gaming- ... uage=en_GB

In a YouTube video the GF4060 didn't get a very well reputation. So I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with it.

And can anyone tell me, if this PC as a whole, would work well for Davinci Resolve 18?
E.g. what's about its CPU (Intel Core i5-13400F).

It's specifications are:
- Intel Core i5-13400F
- 16GB DDR4 RAM,
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060
- Windows 11 Home

I chose a Intel Arc as it seems to be more cost effective. It is definetly a good idea to use a Intel CPU with build in GPU like Intel i9. I don't know what it's called, quicklink IIRC, which speeds up rendering quite a bit. I have already a AMD Ryzen, so I can't say much about that.
AV1 4k renders now nearly realtime which is awsome if you ever tried that without GPU support.
The Intel Arc is unusable for gaming.

DaVinci would work but will struggle anything with BRAW, Red RAW, or professional codecs. Amateur codecs like h.26x codecs will work with short clips and 1080p, assuming the 4060 has 8gb vram only. It is suitable for YouTube work.

I have much older hardware and BRAW works without flaw.

In fact, most media does.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Oh, I didn’t say it won’t work. It will work and I too have an older system. But when I start applying NR and OFX on nodes, a 4K 24fps with about 12 nodes will playback an average of 15-19 fps sometimes better to about 22. Now it is fixable; use proxy and it’s fine. Now that’s with BRAW. With 4K RedRAW, it will be around 12-17fps. That’s what I meant by struggle.
