Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt : No video capture

PostThu Nov 22, 2012 6:40 am

Hi All-

I'm hoping for a solution, or at least some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this. Just got an Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt which I'm using on my MacBook Pro (Retina) with Mac OS X 10.8.2.

My goal is to capture video of an iPad for product videos. I've previously gotten this to work on a PC with an installed Intensity Pro capture card. This is unwieldy and I really need the video capture on the Mac.

I've connected the Intensity Shuttle to the Mac.

The System Information shows the "Intensity Shuttle TB" as a recognized Thunderbolt device. CHECK.
In Media Express (3.1.1) the Device menu recognizes and selects "Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt". CHECK.

But with the iPad (2nd Gen) plugged into the Shuttle via HDMI adapter and cable, I get nothing. Media Express shows "No Remote".
I can take the same iPad, adapter, and HDMI cable, and plug them into my TV, and the iPad shows up flawlessly.

Is there any suggested troubleshooting step? Any setting that I should have already accounted for?

Thanks!
Brian A.

Hi Brian,

In my experience iPads and other tablets and portable devices can be a bit tricky to work with. They don't often report what video format they are outputting over HDMI, and it may output different formats to different monitors and capture devices, and then some may have HDCP protection.

If you are using a different generation iPad or a different HDMI adapter to what you had previously tested with the Intensity Pro, it's quite possible that you're seeing a compatibility issue with one or the other. If it's the same model and adapter, maybe there's a settings issue. I would suggest checking the various format settings, and make sure the Intensity Shuttle's input is set to HDMI. Checking with another HDMI device would also give you a better idea of whether it's just a problem with the iPad, or a more general HDMI issue. Typically if something works with the Intensity Pro, we would expect it to work with the Shuttle.

If you still get nowhere please get in contact with support in your region, as they may have some more tips. You can find the support numbers on the page here.

Don't let the "No Remote" message throw you off. You don't have a valid RS422 connection to the iPad for remote deck control, hence the message.

Best thing is to try the various "Project Video Format" settings and see if any one of them will work.

Last time I checked the ipad 2 was outputting 720p NTSC no way to change it without a scaler.
