It's included in the Desktop video software, so you have to install the whole package to get it

Thanks Adam,
I had heard that this was a freeware utility that was generally available, so this is incorrect and the only way to get the utility is to buy the entire software package?

Thanks again.

The Desktop video software is free. Just go to the support page and download it

A very similar free product (and available as stand-alone app) is AJA's System test:
https://www.aja.com/en/products/aja-system-test

One of the things I prefer about it is that it gives an optional graphical view of the speed throughout the test. This lets you visually see if there are dropouts or inconsistent speeds, and how slow those dropouts are.

I had some SD cards that kept faulting out in a camera. BMD Speed test showed it as capable in speed. The AJA System test showed it capable as well, overall - but on the graph, you could see it dropping below a capable speed periodically - which was what was causing the recording to drop out.

I use both, but prefer the System Test.

I don't understand why BMD makes it so hard to download the stand alone of this free tool!! Why I have to install useless softwares just to get the Disk Speed tool? Any why the Apple version of Speed Disk is available as stand alone, and not the Windows version?

It downloaded and installed with the Studio version on my system. You will find it in the Blackmagic Design folder in the Windows Start menu.

I also did not get the Disk Speed Test bundled with my Davinci Studio install. Where can I download it?

Go to the Support page on the Blackmagic website. With none of the Product Family tabs selected Desktop Video is the forth item down in the left hand column.

I registered just to update this thread with the easy download link, go to this page and download the latest Desktop Video XX.X.X version in the top left corner under the "Latest Software And Support Notes" headline with the OS icons next to the "Download Now" text:

www dot blackmagicdesign dot com /developer/product/capture-and-playback

Hope this helps others, as I was looking for the disk speed test for Windows as well. It wasn't easy to find even within the Support area... the scrolling downloads area is not the greatest user experience.

I found that page above which has the direct download link.
