Running OSX Yosemite on a 2014 iMac - HDMI input is from a Canon Xa11, all I see is a black screen the iMac is recognising the shuttle though,
HDMI out from the shuttle is also displaying a black screen.

Camera outputs 1080P while Shuttle only goes till 1080i.. SO your camera outputs to high framerate for the Shuttle. Try setting it to 1080I or 720P Output resolution

Yes, once I'd altered the camera's HDMI output to 720p everything started working.
