I recently purchased the davinci dongle software but it didn't come with a dongle or software. Is this required? What Is it purpose?

So did you purchase the dongle from a reseller or the activation code? If it was the latter, the activation code will be entered in the Studio splash screen. That code would be in the stock card sold to you by the reseller. If it was a dongle and there was no dongle in the packaging, you will want to contact the reseller and discuss your options.
