Hi Team,
I would really appreciate guidance and direction to a compatible adaptor to buy for my Laptop to I/F with your product.
I have an Asus Gaming computer running Windows 10.
The Exact Laptop model: ASUS ROG G752VY-T7048T
The key connections that may interface are
1 x USB 3.1 Type-C port,
2 x USB 3.0 port,
1 x mini display port.

I have a Ultrastudio Black Magic Mini Recorder which connects to computer via Thunderbolt 2 connection.

Please can you tell me a certified adaptor to connect my Laptop to BM Mini-Recorder device?

I have researched the Startech & Apple USB Type C to Thunderbolt 2 Adaptor.....each one costs £100+

Please can you advise and direct me

Regards
Bansi

Can someone suggest a USB 3.1 (Type C) Video Capture card for my laptop. Ideally, it would feature an SDI Video input

The only capture device connections offered from us are PCIe, USB3 or Thunderbolt connections. We do not have a product that connects via USB-C (USB 3.1) for capture at this time nor is there any planned announcement for one.

Hi Tony,
Thank you for your reply.
Can you please confirm if the following solution is possible for me.
If I buy this product:
"
StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter – Backward Compatible – USB C to Mini DisplayPort – USB-C to Thunderbolt 2
"

I connect my Blackmagic Mini-Recorder to this adaptor. I can then connect my SDI camera for live-streaming.
I will be using the Asus Gaming windows laptop which has a USB Type C Thunderbolt port.

Please advise.

Regards
Bansi

If you can confirm that the computer has actual Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C connection type) ports then, you can connect older Thunderbolt products of ours. The adapters that we have had the most successful reports with are the Apple branded Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and the StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt Adapter - Windows and Mac.

Hi Tony
Thank you for the reply

The exact Laptop i have is ASUS ROG G752VY-T7048T
i am 100% confident that it has a USB 3.1 Type C port.

I don't know if it is GEN 1 or GEN 2?

Are there any other checks that i can perform on the Laptop to verify 100% which i can share with you if my Laptop ticks all the boxes for compatibility?

Once again, thank you for the advice and support.

Regards
Bansi

According to the ASUS website, the ASUS ROG G752VY does have a Thunderbolt 3 connection on the main page however, the wording is a bit tricky if you look on the specifications page. You may want to verify with them before purchasing any Thunderbolt 3 products/adapters so you aren't wasting your money.

  So there are other companies too that use suggestive language for marketing..

Onboard Intel® Thunderbolt™ technology gives you single-cable data and signal transmission rates of up to 20Gbits/s – twice the bandwidth of USB 3.1. ROG G752 gives you both Intel Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 Type-C for increased compatibility with your various devices.

1 x Microphone-in jack
1 x COMBO audio jack
1 x USB 3.1 TYPE C port(s)
4 x USB 3.0 port(s)
1 x RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert
1 x HDMI
1 x mini Display Port
1 x micro SDXC card reader
1X AC adapter plug

As i read it.. The USB-C is doubled as a Thunderbolt port.

And if i may believe this story on CNET about Intel it is a combination port.
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/usb-type-c-thunderbolt-3-one-cable-to-connect-them-all/
In fact, device manufacturers are so confident in the new USB-C standard that Intel announced last year that Thunderbolt 3, once thought to be a USB replacement, will use the same port type as USB-C. This means every Thunderbolt 3 port will also work as a USB-C port and every Thunderbolt 3 cable will work as a USB-C cable.

Hi Tony and Daniel,
I can confirm that this laptop does have a Thunderbolt 3 port as ASUS website has confirmed that the XG Station 2 is compatible with my laptop model which connects via Thunderbolt 3.

I have updated the Laptop BIOS, Intel controller, Firmware and Thunderbolt drivers so hopefully this will help ensure that any adaptor i try should work....

Once i try Startech and Apple adaptor, I will update this post with any problems/success i face.
I will try and reach out to ASUS if i have problems also.

regards
Bansi

Hi Tony and Daniel,

I have successfully tested the Startech TB3 to TB2 adaptor using the Ultrastudio Mini-Recorder attached via SDI and HDMI connection.

I have not yet tested using the Apple TB3 to TB2 adaptor.

I had to update Bios, Firmware, Thunderbolt drivers/software......sooo many updates required.

Thank you for your support and help.

I am not sure if i will get my hands on the Apple adaptor

Warm regards
Bansi

Before purchasing another adapter, I would be certain all updates to the OS have been done and then attempt again. If you have the ability to, finding someone else that has a Thunderbolt 3 port on their computer to test that adapter and Thunderbolt cable combined with our capture device would be the next step. Even possibly going to the local Apple store and confirm this with their computers might be an option for you as well.

Hi @Tony Rivera - would this work for connecting a color grading monitor : MBP 2015 TB2 (Latest Mojave OSX, SSD, AMD M370) running Resolve 15 or 16 -> TB2 to TB3 adapter -> UltraStudio 4K Mini -> CG monitor (eg. Eizo) where:

TB2 to TB3 adapter is either Startech or Apple?

I appreciate that performance would be limited by both the MBP and TB2.

Thanks in advance,

David

This is something you would need to speak with Dell about or possible Apple as this is not something we can provide guidance on.

Thunderbolt 3 adapters will not work in reverse to connect to an older Thunderbolt 1/2 port. These are meant to connect older Thunderbolt 1/2 connections to the newer Thunderbolt 3/USB-C connections.

Hello Tony,
I'm trying to connect my Ultra Studio Mini Recorder by using Apple USB Type C to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to my new laptop computer Acer Predator PH317-52. Unfortunately I can't do that. Could You tell me what the reason is?
Thank You!

If you're referring to this Acer Predator, the port on there is a USB-C port and while the physical connection matches, it does not appear to be an actual Thunderbolt 3 port from the spec sheet.

With the current system you have, we do not have a solution to capture content from a Thunderbolt 1/2 device to a USB connection. We also do not have a product that will connect via USB-C to capture content to that computer.

Why not? I need to capture a production to my PC for post work. How to do this?

Buy an Atem mini. It will connect to your machine and it will capture HDMI up to 1080P60.

It will show up as a HD Webcam and can be captured by OBS Studio or Vmix.

Now you have a solution!!! 8-)

ATEM Mini is impossible to buy, delivery dates are being shifted month after month.

Plus, I have a TVS HD and I don't need yet another ATEM switch, my personal need is to capture SDI on a Linux machine. It seems like BMD has the only option with PCIe DeckLink 4K but it won't work on a laptop.
