Go to device manager, find "Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K" device which will have yellow exclamation mark on it.
Right-click on it and choose "Update Driver" and then choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
Now choose "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
Click "Have Disk" button and navigate to this file via browse option - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic Camera Setup\DriverUSB\Cameras\CinemaCamera.inf"

Click "Open" then "OK" and you'll be presented with list of devices where you'll choose "Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K" and hit Next

You'll be presented with a "Update Driver Warning" window here to which you say Yes and complete driver update.
If you followed the steps correctly the yellow exclamation mark should be gone from camera entry in device manager.
Now you can run the firmware update without any issues.
Tested a few times on two machines, worked like a charm.

Thanks for all the info, but my version of 6.2 does not have Cinema Camera.inf file in Cameras John Thomson

Sounds like you've missed a step in the instructions.

You need to choose "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer" first.

If you try to locate the driver manually via the "Browse..." button right away, you won't be able to see the inf file.

What type of cable are you using? And have you tried a different one?
How long did you wait for the update process to continue? Initially it can take some time until the progress bar moves.

Shouldn't there be a warning on the download page about this?
I spent all of yesterday evening trying to update before I searched and found this thread.

update
I am not having any luck updating by using the workaround.
It is not finding a compatible driver.
I am running Windows 7.
BM - Is the driver compatible with Windows 7 please?

Yes it is. I have done the update successfully under Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Are you sure you have followed the steps mentioned above to the T?

It's a problem with the BM updater software and the drivers.
Look halfway up this page and you will find a workaround.

O.K. Guys. This fix worked a treat for me on Windows 10. Everything prior to this failed.
1- Delete Blackmagic from your computer and restart computer.
2- Reload from S.D. card that came with your camera.
3- Goto Blackmagic design webpage. Register the camera. Download 6.2 update and restart your computer.
4- MAKE SURE YOU CONNECT YOUR CAMERA TO A USB 2 PORT.
5- Select Blackmagic camera setup. Update. This will fail.
6- Now follow carefully the steps provide by Eugene Chebotarev. Page 3 in Blackmagic forum. ( Cant update bmpcc4k to firmware 6.2 ) Follow it to the letter. Only click on what he tells you to click on.
* Note. As you are going through the program file part highlight Cinema camera. Then open. NOT .inf
7- After you have completed his list. DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR CAMERA OR TURN IT OFF. JUST LEAVE IT ALONE.
8- Close only the screen that said update failed. Leaving the camera setup page. Now click update camera and all is well. * Note. The update will hang at 70 % for 3-5 minutes and you will hear the camera disconnecting. Leave it alone. It WILL start again and finish updating.
9- Now go and film some amazing footage. ENJOY!!!

Okay, after a couple of days with no reply, I've ditched the Windows 10 workaround and uploaded using Mac OS. That worked. And after more digging around, I've found that there is only a brief mention about BRAW Viewer not being compatible with Windows in the news feed. Why not just say it outright? So anyway, my best deduction to this issue is that this update 6.2 doesn't work with 6.1 cameras using PC, because it is still not BRAW compatible, hence the driver prompts stating being missing or not compatible.
I had the Cinema DNG preloaded until I back updated to 5.2 and back to 6.2 again under Kim and Eugene's method, and that proved the same outcome, missing or not compatible. I just hope a new Windows compatible BRAW Viewer update will be coming in the near future, (most likely with 6.3 for Windows users) because it's Mac OS only for the time being. I just hope this turnaround happens real soon...

I wanted to say how much I appreciated your solution - I was in despair! The problem doesn't seem to be with cables, or ports, but with the driver being mishandled in the update. I don't know how you figured it out, but, again, thanks. I only hope the Blackmagic techs take note. This should not be hard to implement inside the app.

BMPCC4k 6.2 firmware update

Hi Guys,

I just received my camera today and thought why not update to 6.2 and try out BRAW. Immediately i have encountered my first problem

I've downloaded blackmagic camera setup and when plugin my camera and turn it on it is recognized (all good so far right). The problem is that when i hit update the camera immediately turns off (power light goes red/screen goes black) and after a few minute the update fails.

I'm hoping someone out there has encountered this or may have some idea as to how to solve it?

Thanks!

EDIT: nvm guys Eugene solved this!

This is crazy, I got my camera today, after finding out that the battery cover doesn't close, I can't turn the camera on/off without taking the battery out and the software is not updatable on a Mac.

Is there any similar trick than the one Eugene had that works on Mac?

Update from Phone Support: 'Please send it in and we'll update it'

Disappointing ... Might just return it or list it on eBay.

Hi,

Finally today, I was able to downgrade from the factory 6.2 to 6.1. The culprit was USB3 – wasn’t careful enough reading that it needs USB 2.0 on a Mac too, my mistake. When I put a USB 2.0 cable with USB-C adapters on both ends and connected the camera to MBP, everything went fluently. Although in the end of the process came “Updating the Csamera software failed”! But I went to Setup menu in camera and saw “software 6.1” and Cinema DGN is now available.

So, for me at least USB 2.0 cable solved the issue, it was just so hard to find an old type of cable from anywhere.

Which MacBook Pro did you downgrade with? I am trying to upgrade and have the latest MBP that only has USB-C ports. So I bought a USB 2 hub, connected it via the USB-C - USB 3.0 adapter to my MBP, and connected the camera with USB3.0 to USB-C to the USB 2 hub. Did not work.

Kate, which USB-C cables have you tried directly with the camera? Not all cables are equal in capabilities and quality.
I was able to update via USB-C Thunderbolt 3 directly from my Lenovo Thinkpad P51 by using a DeLock 84844 Thunderbolt 3 USB-C 0.5m cable.

Hi Robert,

I tried a few combinations. Computers I used were MacBook Pro (latest), Mac Pro (latest), MacBook Pro (USB 2.0 Late 2010), and iMac 2012 (USB2).

In terms of cables I have tried:

USB-C to USB-C cables that come with Lacie drives
USB 3.0 to USB-C cable with USB-C adapter on MacBook Pro
Tether Tool USB 3.0 to USB-C cables
latest MBP: USB-C to USB3.0 adapter powering a USB 2.0 hub where I used the USB3.0 - USB-C cable.

I am waiting to get a USB2.0 to USB-C cable from Amazon, which I will try on my USB 2.0 iMac and also on my MacBook Pro with USB-C adapter.

This camera and it's bugs is ridiculous. I've spent two days with it and have not even filmed a thing yet.

Hi Kate,

I have the latest MBP (2018, OSX10.14.4) too , and I just had two USB-C to USB-A adapters and the USB 2.0 cable. I think it was important to have real USB 2.0 cable in between the adapters, this solved the issue. I specifically checked that the cable was genuinely USB 2.0. And as they have said, you need to uninstall Blackmagic Cameras app and re-install it before you hook in the camera. (Can't remember if I turned the cam on while pushing the focus button, as they advised somewhere too.)

True, this feels really silly to need a dinosaur cable to do an up/downgrade to a camera published last year.

Sincerely hope you get it through!

Thank you so much Lauri, this is really helpful as you seem to have the same set up than I do.

In terms of adapter, just confirming you had two of those: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... A514&smp=Y

and in terms of USB 2.0 cable was that an A-Male to A-Male, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-1-5ft- ... 129&sr=1-3

I wouldn't be so carzy about updating this camera if it would be possible to turn it off in version 5.2 ... lol

But I would believe the USB-C to USB-A adapters would not be the culprit – USB 2.0 cable important.

Hope this helps!

Update: after spending almost $100 on cables and hubs I finally found a way to update the firmware on that buggy camera ...

I bought this cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GG ... UTF8&psc=1

Installed the firmware from my Mid-2010 iMac that has only USB2.0 and that worked.

I did not have to press the focus button when I turned the camera on.

Blackmagic Support, thanks for not being helpful at all and recommending me to send the camera in for an update, also thanks for not including a USB 2.0 cable that would work with the camera?! After failing for three days I can finally start to film a test and play around.

I walked past B&H in New York today and asked them for help, their quote was 'that's the Blackmagic saga, you find some people on the internet that are able to update it but it's hard to replicate, all their cameras are like that ...'

This is off to a great start!

P.S. On 6.1 I still can not turn the camera off without removing the battery ... ?!

If you cannot turn off the camera with firmware 6.1 too, it might be the right time to admit that you got a faulty camera and let BMD replace it for a working one. That behavior of the camera is with absolute certainty not normal and a sign of an electronic problem.

B&H is not correct in their statement, I and many others have been able to update BMD cameras without a problem since the first BMCC came out in 2013.
The current problem on Windows OS was specific to Windows 10 and some strange constellations and had been fixed with 6.2.1. Nevertheless I was able to update under Windows 7 and under Windows 10 with the non-bugfixed firmware. Many others have been able to update under OS-X, so it remains unclear what went wrong with those who couldn't get it to work under OS-X.
It is often very hard to replicate what a user is doing if you are not sitting nearby and actually watching him.

And it's also no longer necessary on Windows as long as you use v6.2.1

Kristian, may I suggest that BMD provides some recommended cable specs? Because with USB-C there are so many variables which could influence what is working and what not.

Ray, the problem is there. USB-C cables can have Thunderbolt 3 or not. They can have TB3 but not full speed and or not all power options. They can even be USB2 only but with the USB-C form factor.

Just have a read here to get a brief glimpse of the problem:

Good to know thank you for pointing it out to have both charger and battery connected. The alternative of power interruuption sounds not very pleasant!

I have a little bit different issue...
I can't install the CameraSetUp 6.3 on my mac, because the OS requirements is no "HighSierra".
Older Camera SetUp Apps worked on my mac.. even version 6.2 !!

So how should it be possible to update the Camera if you don't have a suitable Computer, or maybe no Computer at all.

Why isn't the "Camera SetUp App" just an ordinary App that connects to your Camera and with functions like "reset" the camera... up or downgrade the Firmware, etc.

Why is the whole App the "Firmware"?

I don't understand that.

Why is the whole App the "Firmware"?

I don't understand that.

6.3 is for the Ursa Mini Pro.

6.2.1 is the latest for the Pocket 4K.

I can't install the CameraSetUp 6.3 on my mac, because the OS requirements is no "HighSierra".
Older Camera SetUp Apps worked on my mac.. even version 6.2 !!

... well anyway .. if I would have a Ursa Mini Pro I couldn't install the App/Firmware, because I don't have a "new" mac.
