Is Log Footage Okay for Tracking?

PostMon Dec 09, 2013 12:48 pm

Hi everyone,

I seem to be having some difficulty motion tracking footage from the BMPCC in Mocha. Could it have anything to do with the fact that the footage was shot with LOG? Might Mocha and other trackers rely on the differences in color that are evident with linear or graded footage? Or is all of the information a tracking program needs present with LOG footage even if the footage appears gray? Thanks for any input for advice.

I usually put an "auto contrast" and a heavy unsharp masking filter over LOG footy before tracking.
Once I got the tracking data, I delete the filters.

Thanks, Frank. How would that work with something like Mocha where you have to import footage? Would you have to render out a version of the footage with those filters to use for tracking purposes?

Mocha only uses luminance, not color. As Frank suggested, a contrast adjustment might help.
