Decision to buy a BMCC 6K Full Frame

PostSat Feb 03, 2024 8:17 pm

As best as I can, I want to avoid buying a camera and then have to return it to the store shortly after for warranty repair if there are known issues from the start. Regarding the new BMCC 6K Full Frame camera, I saw several folks have reported vertical and horizontal banding issues. Some say it is a bad sensor. I am paranoid that I may have the same issue. Shall I wait and avoid buying this camera until BM releases a firmware update or fix for this issue? Is everyone encountering this issue?

I suppose one should say that there are no guarantees of perfection; that’s why there’s usually a return policy “no questions asked” for your vendor. If you beyond the point of return, then an unsatisfactory camera will need to be repaired via your regional BMD Support.

On the positive side if you’ve read the threads on this forum regarding those issues, you will appreciate that you’re unlikely to experience those issues. It’s not healthy to live in fear, but make your own judgement based on your experiences.

a few options I go with:
- Buy local, if you can. If there's an issue, you can get something resolved very quickly.
- Buy used. If someone can verify that the camera (out of the box) is fully functional and working, then there you go.

Ultimately, there's gonna be limitations of ANY camera you buy.
Focus on what the camera is capable of, rather than it's faults.

Things I love about the 6k FF:
- Color
- Full Frame
- L Mount
- 3:2 format
- Familiarity
- CFast Express Media

Things I've learned to work around:
- Getting my own ND filters
- Not being able to rely on ProRes
- Trying to stay around 400 ISO and only going to 1250 ISO when truly needed

My read of Pete's post is that he's decided to purchase the camera but wants advice on whether to wait until Blackmagic has resolved what he believes, based on reports from users, is a specific, current problem.

There appear to be two questions.

Its the problem real and frequent?

If so, should he wait until it's fixed? A related question: does the problem show itself right away, or can it emerge weeks or months from purchase?

Presumably, he isn't under pressure to make the purchase right now.
