BMCC SSD won't go in

PostThu Dec 12, 2013 2:18 pm

Hello Everybody,

I recently shot in 98F/38C outdoor for 30 mins. I pulled out the SSD after the shoot. I am not able to put the SSD back in today. On closer observation, it appears that the plastic case into which the SSD goes in seems to have melted and lost it's shape! Has anyone had/heard of this problem before?
Cheers!

Man, thats weird!

Where were you to get 38°C?
I know its hot but not enough to melt the plastic. The SSD heatens a lot too. Dont know if this combination would be enough to melt the plastic, even it being just half an hour.

You sure it melted or could it be something else?

Morning:

Our suggested range for the camera is to not run the camera below 0 degrees Celsius and or at more than 45 degrees Celsius ambient temperature. It doesn't sound like you out of that range.

Terry

I've never seen one of the drive cages melt from normal operating temperatures on those cameras. If it is indeed out of shape something must have gone wrong.

You might want to contact your local support office and see if it can be brought in for evaluation.

Even though the camera will operate at high temperatures (as indicated by Terry) the SSD, being INSIDE the camera and being electrically "live" often gets quite warm. Perhaps the internal temperature was high enough for the plastic to melt on the SSD ?

What brand was the SSD ?

The SSD actually get much hotter than the other sensors. But if this was a general problem, then I'd expect to see many more drive cages melt, and it would be a similar situation on the Hyperdeck Studio line too.

HOWEVER! If a drive is in it that gets hot enough to cause it to soften, I'd expect it to hold it's shape because of the disks presence. If it softened enough to drip, i'd expect something far worse going on.

I'd still maintain that the camera should be looked at. And the disk too.
