PYXIS and Panasonic BS1H

PostTue May 14, 2024 5:21 am

Except for the monitor these two cameras basically have the same specs though the bs1 is cheaper.
But the bs1 is much smaller than the PYXSIS so what is filling the PYXSIS body? Why Couldn't it have xlr and ND filters? I could for much less configure the BS1 much cheaper with braw and have a similar capable camera.

The shape is about the same size as the bmc 6k but does not have the dslr look. BMD could have done something like this and it would still be a box. Not knocking the PYXIS which I love But comparing both the BS1 costs less.

The one thing that made me not get a BS1H (or S1H) back then was that SDI and HDMI outs both have pretty significant latency, more than comparable cameras. With a zero latency transmitter, the AC would still have to pull focus from an image that's around 4-5 frames behind.

Looks like Panasonic never fixed that issue with their hybrids/entry cinema cameras.

It is really bad, even with genlock the lag is ~4 frames. I've both BGH1s and Micro 4KG2s, I prefer the Panasonics in virtually every way save the latency.

Good Luck

I prefer the pyxis but aside personal and profesional preferences its not that different especially for the main market it serves. And its accepted by Netflix for its productions. So it cant be that bad.
Sure Id rather show up to a shoot with the pyxis.

Same here. When I was considering a b-cam to my OG UM4.6k, I looked at a number of cameras including the BS1H. It ticked a lot of boxes for me, but the main drawbacks (for me) were the internal recording formats and the recording media. I've had too many SD cards get stuck in Panasonic cameras - I don't trust that combination anymore. Considering price, image quality, what I needed the camera to do, and every other thing, I eventually settled on the gen 1 BMPCC6k. If I had the same choice to make today, I would probably choose the Pyxis or one of the Pocket 6k cameras to match my UMP12k.

Then why not use a Video Assist or Atomos to record? needs a monitor anyway?

I prefer to do the primary recording in-camera. I use recording monitors for backup, or to record multiple formats at once (BRAW+DNxHD or Prores).
