Really? Still only 1080p output from the BMPCC4K? I was hoping this would give the camera the ability to output 4K60 over USB-C, what a shame!

Unfortunately, this is not going to change due to a hardware limitation.

So what is the GA date of the 8.6? Will it still support ProRes codec?

Not sure about the GA date, there are still a few items we might want to add in or fix as well.

Of course it will still have ProRes. Don't listen to rumours.

Any chance this firmware will also come to some of the other cameras? Like the URSA Mini Pro G2? Would love if that could happen. Would keep the P6KPro and UMPG2 as equal companions.

Also, since the P4K got these updates and the UMPG2 is more powerful I'm sure it can handle these updates. Plus the UMP12K can also probably handle it and should get it.

What is odd is resolve seems to even know to pull the file back down from the cloud to the computer, it just never gets put in my project.

The phone app doesn't have the same issue for me at the moment.

I might put a video out after I understand it better, or its fully working. If this is part of the beta that is understandable.

I want to see the return of CinemaDNG for stills and all flavours of anamorphic squeeze especially 1.5x for the 6KFF just as in the Pyxis. Also fix the EF mount macro lenses iris fluctuation issue when used with a L mount to EF adapter on the 6KFF.

Put my P4K through its paces on a 8 hr shoot recently. Found some issues with the 8.6 Beta firmware.

1. The camera would occasionally freeze to the point where I couldn't even turn it off. Had to pull the battery. (Thankfully, never lost any footage.)

2. The camera didn't so much freeze (I could still go into the menu and do stuff), but it would fail to start recording until I pulled the battery.

3. REALLY not liking all the new files and folders that are showing up on my CFAST card in support of the new clip review features in the camera. I would LOVE to have some way of disabling that so I got one file per clip...and nothing else. The way it used to be. (Much better for copying the card to Media drives.)

Just to be clear, the reported aperture changing at close focus distances is NORMAL behavior on a lot of macro lenses: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4293259

Hi Kristian,

I can confirm this error. DJI RS2 is currently working on firmware but on 8.6 beta release no focus or record control, the RS2 does not even recognize the camera. And I can confirm that "Use as Webcam" is turned off. When I downgrade to firmware 8.1, "camera control cable connected" appears on the RS2 and camera control works as expected.

No its not. The Canon macro lenses I use has constant aperture on ALL focus distances on ALL the Blackmagic cameras. Please do not derail the fixes.

Update!
Sean, have you use Canon EF and EFS Macro lenses before? It would seem you never did and you based your claims on postings you read online that has nothing to do with Canon Macro lenses as fact. Very irresponsible I might say.

Its not been reported to the support team, only mention on this forum.

BMCC6K when using Sigma MC-21 L to EF adapter the following Canon Macro lenses iris fluctuates depending on focus distances.
Canon EFS 60mm f2.8 Macro
Canon EFS 35mm f2.8 Macro IS STM
Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM

All of these lenses the iris are fixed and does not fluctuate with focus distances on any Blackmagic cameras with EF mount or cameras with M43 mount with Metabones EF adapter. With Canon cameras the iris also does not fluctuates with these lenses.

Hi Kristian,

I have 6K G2 and using DJI RS3 with latest firmware. Have the same issue oon beta 8.6. Focus and record button doesn work. I am on the latest DJI RS3 firmware and the webcam optionis turned off. Downgrading to 8.5.1 the USB connection works again. I have done this cycle now 3 times and can confirm the beta firmwawre breaks the USB cable connection on DJI RS.

Cheers,

Yes am exactly, just download (or reinstall if you still have the file) the earlier camera firmware. No gotchas, working great just as before.

Aperture is fixed at all times on all these lenses I mentioned. I use these lenses for many years on my Canon bodies and also Blackmagic cameras. I would never purchase these lenses if the aperure changes with focus distances and indeed they were all adverised as fixed constant aperture. In this world there are both fixed and variable Macro lenses, whoever says you can only have Macro lenses with variable aperture is plain wrong.

If you don't believe me go rent any of these lenses and try it yourself on a Canon body or BMPCC6K, UMP or any BMD cameras with EF mount or M43 mount with Metabones Speedbooster EF mount.

I do have one flaw with the current Beta. Plugging the UMPG2 into the computer with the Camera Setup application open no longer corrects date and time on the camera. This needs to be fixed as that’s how I quickly make sure the camera has the right date and time before shoots.

I tested using the iPhone Lightning to USB-C and Blackmagic Camera app to update the Pocket’s Date & Time and it worked perfectly so that’s really great. Would love for that to also come to the URSA models. Obviously the new URSA Cine will have it, but the older URSA Mini Pro models need it as well. That will save a lot of hassle having to use a computer like I have in the past.

Either way, the fact that the computer has been unable to change date and time on the UMPG2 with this new firmware has been really annoying. Everything else is awesome for the Pocket Camera. But the URSA Mini Pros need to be included.

It one thing to test a beta, it's another to have a feature that was supposed to work out of the box and 6months later still doesn't work correctly.

Hey everyone.

I picked up a new 6K FF during the new sale. And I am having an issue that is definitely above my pay grade. When you have a new cam, card, card reader, beta version of things, etc. It is difficult for me to know what could be causing the issue. I did reach out to Blackmagic Design of course and waiting to hear back. But I just realized that I accidentally updated the new cam to Beta 8.6 instead of the official 8.5.1. And I wasn't sure if that could be causing the issue. So I thought I would ask here.

I have already gone into detail with video and pics in a different topic. So I will drop a link here. If anyone has any insights are thoughts that would be great.

As always thanks, really appreciate the community that goes along with cameras here.

Rolling shutter correction and stabiliser should be added as in camera options instead of having to do it in post in Davinci Resolve.

Is the Cinema Camera 6K supposed to have the Zoom and Focus Demand pages? I was under the impression those things wouldn't work with this style of camera.

Also what are the chances of 5K and 3K crops as well as binned 3K and 2K modes being added to the BMCC6K?

The 5K crop would bridge the gap between 6K and 4K so there's more options for shooting down-sampled 4K DCI at higher frame rates. The 3K crop would be useful to bridge the gap with 2K so someone can shoot higher frame rates without having to up-sample as much.

The binned modes would be useful because I'm under the impression that binned modes on CMOS sensors can provide faster readouts if it can do it during the readout. If so then it would be great to have options for some lower resolution/higher frame rate modes with less crop and noise. If anything it would at least make the BMCC6K and everything in the Pocket line more usable for 2K recording at lower frame rates.

I go into more detail about this in another thread

Then you're stuck with the corrections it's making. Considering that rolling shutter also can't really be fixed with post-processing, that would be a bad idea. For example, if you're filming someone on the subway and the train comes by, in camera rolling shutter correction might detect the skewing of the train and unskew that while skewing the person in the shot.

I fear them require too much power to be done in realtime from that camera.

I reckon gyro stabilisation is possible in-camera because the EVF has a "smooth" option just that there is no option to record it.

The "EVF Smooth Motion" option isn't related to the gyro or stabilization. It's an option to prevent judder in the OLED EVF.

So having this feature is misleading, you never going to get that smooth and stable shot you see in the EVF? I better not use it then.

It's not more stable though. It has less temporal judder. On other cameras EVFs can have a higher frame rate but I don't know if that's how BMD has implemented it.

Please provide more details.

What version were you on when the DJI RS2 was working?

Did you check that the Webcam option is turned off when you are using the DJI RS2 in the 8.6 beta release?

Hi Kristian,

I have 6K G2 and using DJI RS3 with latest firmware. Have the same issue oon beta 8.6. Focus and record button doesn work. I am on the latest DJI RS3 firmware and the webcam optionis turned off. Downgrading to 8.5.1 the USB connection works again. I have done this cycle now 3 times and can confirm the beta firmwawre breaks the USB cable connection on DJI RS.

Cheers,

Chang

Hi Kristian,

Any updates on this issue? Is the firmware team aware of the problem and is it going to be fixed?

I'm having the same issue with the old Pocket 6K and the RS3 Pro. Updating the camera breaks the gimbal remote record function. Downgrading to the old software restores that function.

Hi,

I'm in touch with DJI to see why this is happening.

Hey BMD team, just picked up a Cinema Camera 6k and I have some 1.5 anamorphic lenses on the way. Would love some sort of update to allow you to choose a 1.5 de-squeeze in any of the shooting modes, whether it's "proper" or not. Would love to make use of the different frame rates, or any of them, while viewing the correct squeeze ratio.

Thanks!

Btw, it would be great if we could disable proxy recording on the BMCC6K. I know that proxies don't use up much space but clearly recording an additional h.264 file is going use more power and a lot of the time I'd prefer to have longer battery life over proxies.

I have searched the forums cannot find anything. Is BM aware that the record/picture button functionality on the Ronin 4 Pro is broken in the beta release? Downgrading back to version 8.1, my only option with the 6K Pro, fixes the issue and the functionality returns (direct connection to the gimbal).

**** disregard, I just found another post and BM states they are discussing with DJI.

Has anyone tried cable connection with RS 4? I’m not using the beta version, yet record button works with Bluetooth but not cable connection. Even DJI has no clue. Bluetooth sucks battery’s juice quickly.

Hi - so, lured by the gyro stabilisation feature, I installed the beta on my4K. I record to SD card (Sandisk Extreme pro 170mbs) and for the first time, seems the card can’t handle recording of BRAW files over 12:1. I get the exclamation mark on the record button and recording cuts out). might this be because the new gyro stabilisation information is overloading the data rate? As I say, 12:1 BRAW seems stable enough but anything over that seems too much for the SD card to handle.

Kristian Lam wrote:Hi,

We’ve just released an 8.6 Beta software update for the Blackmagic Pocket Cameras and the Cinema Camera 6K. This release adds lots of new features to the cameras, especially networking support and the new media pool file browser. With the addition of networking support, we can now allow proxies and the original media to be uploaded to the Blackmagic Cloud. Pocket Camera 6Ks and Cinema Camera 6K now also support mobile phone tethering via USB-C so users can now connect to the Blackmagic Cloud even when out in the field.

Also included in the update is the ability to allow your cameras to be used as a webcam device via USB-C. This is a great feature as the camera can now be seen by any application that supports common UVC (USB Video Class) devices and used as a video source.

Please refer to the release notes for what's new.

That would only be true if the SD card you're using was only barely able to handle 8:1. Gyro data is not going to take up much space at all. It shouldn't be much more than three numbers per frame. Even if those were 64-bit numbers that would only be an addition 1.44KBps at 60fps. Also the gyro stabilization feature wasn't added in this firmware update. It's been around for 2 years now.

Wait? You can use the camera as a card reader? How do I get that working?

Interesting- thanks Mark - Looks like time to finally make the switch to CFast! Amazed I’ve only just realised about the gyro feature, and I’ve 8.1 for ages. I use stabilisation quite a lot but don’t often use braw.
