Distorted audio on BM Video Assist 12G with S5II X

PostTue May 28, 2024 3:19 pm

Hello everyone, i didn't found any solution for this issue
I was recording an interview with my S5IIX, recording BRaw via HDMI cable, and everything was fine for the first part of the interview.
The audio was fine, then i had to change batteries on the camera, switch off everything, and recorded again the remaining part of the interview without changing nothing..
From this momento the Video Assist recorded all the audio files on the SSD with the audio that is clipping, even if the audio was not clipping on the camera Audio Level Meters, and the previous record was fine.

Someone experienced this issue? There is a way to process this audio and try to save it?

Other users had reported problems trying to record audio at 96K, I don't think that sample rate is compatible between the two devices. Maybe when the camera was powered on it reverted to a different state, just a guess. You might check the cam to get the current config.

Good Luck

The audio might be salvageable - but that depends on how severe the clipping is.
Some louder parts a bit over - no problem. Everything heavily clipped - no luck.
Anything inbetween those - could be restored ok, but might have some artifacts.

Can you provide a sample uploaded to WeTransfer?

Thanks a lot for your reply.. here there is a sampe in wav 48khz 16bit

This is a sample but the strange thing is that in a audio software this file from the wave form is not reaching the 0db level and it's not clipping

Ok, I've analysed the sample. This is not clipping. This is modulated digital distortion - it seems after the shutdown there has been some kind of a problem with the audio buffer sample rate clock/sync.
Once in a while I have a similar sound with my Motu audio device when the Windows audio driver kinda crashes because the system is forced to 48 kHz but the browser tries to switch to 44.1 kHz for some media. That results in the same robotic voice.

You can see in the spectrogram that there are modulated frequencies along the voice signal - those horizontal line patterns - and also vertical interruptions.

If you zoom into the waveform you can see the modulated spikes all over the signal - that's the issue:

Thanks a lot, and can i ask you how you achivied this result? And what's the best software to use to do it?
I've tryied to sample down everything at 11khz and then everything is worse but is less noticeable the issue

Took me quite some time to figure out a working solution.
I have used iZotope RX Advanced and a combination of several filters I tested against your sample with many different settings.
Have been doing audio restoration for quite some years now.

And there is no way to export a sort of preset for RX Advanced plugin from Izotope?
Causa i have it too but can't figure out how to work with this plugin in this way
I have to Render two bigger files cause it's part of a interview, and both have this issue.
Only to try to use them and save somehow this part of the interview.
Let me know eventually or write me on DM if you need my e-mail.

I’ll be back in office on Sunday, then I can tell you the settings.
It’s not possible to export a preset chain, but I exported an RX doc and XML so I have the exact settings I found to be working.

I’ve also tested it in Steinberg SpectraLayer Pro, but that filtered out too much of the voice signal with no options to tweak the results other by editing them back manually.

Strength: 1.0
Before/after weighting: 0.0
Direction: Vertical

Select All

De-crackle set to:
Quality: High
Strength: 7.0
Amplitude skew: 5.0

Frequency select from 3700 Hz to 24000 Hz

Dialogue Isolate set to:
Dialogue gain: +3.0

Found a better way:

https://www.accentize.com/dxrevive/

Use it with the Studio algorithm set to 75%. (the newer Studio 2 algorithm does not work with this kind of distortion)

You can use the 7-days trial version in iZotope as a plugin (needs iLok demo activation) to clean your audio completely.

Ok wow! This is surely the most efficient and impressive result and really help to save audio recording in this complex situations!
It's crazy how it was able to restore it!

Thanks a lot, cause you find a life saver for this situation.

Probably worth to pin this solution for this problem in the forum.

Really thanks a lot again
