As a matter of interest, is it possible to paint/shade the studio camera without the use of an Atem switcher but by using the software on a computer and the USB-c/ethernet I/O?

That would be cool but no. Firstly the software won’t open without a connected Atem. Second the software only controls the switcher. You’d need to translate the software control commands and convert them to Rest put/get. Even then the Rest API doesn’t offer the speed or granularity of the traditional SDI/HDMI/USB protocols.

I created a Companion config that controls the M4KG2. You can dig around and see how the Rest API works.
