No media for 6K@50 3:1 or better?

PostSat Jul 20, 2024 9:39 am

Hello everyone, I have a question and cannot really seem to find an answer.

I always want (not need) to achieve maximum when recording so was a bit surprised I cannot really find recommended media to record 6k50 at anything better than 5:1. I have Samsung T9 which seems to work well at 3:1 but not at constant quality Q0-Q1.

No CFast or other options.

What are you using?

Thank you in advance...

Data rates are unfortunately restricted by BMD's choice of transfer bus. The USB-C port is 3.1 Gen 1 which is restricted to a theoretical limit of 5 GBit/s which results in the real world in up to 450 MB/s.

Constant quality modes can get quite excessive in bitrates with high detail scenes and easily surpass the available bandwidth.

So there are no real options. That's the reason why BMD changed to CFexpress for the BMCC6k.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Does that mean you don't have any CFast, or don't want one?

Either way, you should change that.

If 3:1 works for you on the T9, that’s still a high quality choice. Otherwise when shooting at 50 fps or higher, Q3 will likely still give you very good results.

The Crucial MX500 1tb with a ORICO enclosure WORKS at those speeds.

You can use these:

ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) https://a.co/d/hDycynH

OR this

ORICO 2.5 Hard Drive Enclosure... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BM9MZXF9?re ... b_ap_share

I have personally tested both.

The drive:

Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD, up to 560MB/s - CT1000MX500SSD1 https://a.co/d/06XLQ0s

The 6K and the G2 and Pro can't reliably record at the max frame rates of it's three highest resolutions at Q0.

6K 16:9 @ 50 Q0 = 404-805MB/s = 605MB/s avg
6K 2.4:1 @ 60 Q0 = 360-718MB/s = 539MB/s avg
5.7K @ 60 Q0 = 396-792MB/s = 594MB/s avg

The CFast 2.0 is just SATA 3.0 so it it pretty much maxes out around 550MB/s, USB 3.1 Gen 1 maxes out at 640MB/s but usually doesn't reach that in the real world, and SDXC cards are obviously slower than both of those. You might be able to record low-detail shots (shots with a lot of bokeh for example) at Q0 because that will trend the bitrate below average but once you have above average detail they'll very quickly drop frames or stop recording.

Now 6K50 at Q1 (270-645MB/s = 457.5MB/s avg) is more manageable but can cause drop frames for really high detail shots.

Thank you all everyone the answers!

But how is this faster than the USB? And also is not recommended for higher quality than the 5:1...

You don't say what camera you're using, Joilette (I assume 6K pocket?). The Ursas having 2 x CF slots, and can reach higher fps and less compression, by using dual mode. For 50/60p this involves recording every alternate frame to each card, when low compression rates might require it (the 2 x files are then automatically combined in Resolve as 1). The newer Ursas, including the 12K and UBG2 also have a faster USB - 10Gbit/s, as opposed to 5 too, so can achieve better rates from external media. And the newer cameras with CFexpress cards, capable of much higher data rates again than CF 2.0 media.

With the single CF 2.0/SD card/USB 5Gbit/s pockets there is a natural technical limit to these rates, no matter their availability in the menu, unfortunately.
