Corrupted card that seemed to record fine? (braw / T7Sheild)

PostMon Jul 15, 2024 6:32 pm

Just finished a shoot and I'm running into a strange issue with some of the footage.

Only the first frame of every clip I recorded on one my cards (T7 Shield) recorded and the rest of the clip is media offline or unplayable. I've shot on my set up for years without any issues and I've used this card (T7 Shield) without any issues. All the other cards on this shoot both before and after recorded fine.

I've tried viewing the clips in braw player, Davinci, and I've even tried playback on my camera but it's the same issues.

It seems like there was a record error and it just didn't record but the weird thing is the recordings never stopped, I never got a record warning while rolling, and the size of the the recordings are accurate to the expected size of recording working properly.

Here is an example. It was shot 50 fps (off speed), it's about 39 seconds long and the size of the file is 1.95gbs.

I suspect they didn't record properly and I'm SOL. Has anyone run into this issue and successfully managed to fix it?

Which size of T7 Shield? Was it formatted in camera before the shoot? HFS+ or exFAT?

Which camera, which camera firmware release?

Which resolution were you recording, with what codec quantization (eg 3:1 or Q0)?

Did you set the camera to stop recording if dropped frames?

2TB, Formatted exFAT before shooting.

Pocket 4k, 6.2

4kdci, 50fps, 5:1 constant quality

It looks like the camera was not set to stop recording if dropped frames. That explains it. Not something I would have ever turned off by choice but too bad. I should have checked it. So does that confirm it just never recorded properly? There is nothing to recovery?

Try contacting BMD support and see if they can recover your file or at least tell you what's going on. Sounds very unusual.

Thanks for the detailed replay. You might want to try running a later general release firmware, not the latest beta. I use 8.1 on the BMPCC4K with 2 TB Samsung T7 Shield formatted HFS+ recording full 4K successfully.

There are many posts on this forum section regarding data recovery. I’ve used Disk Drill years ago. See if a search here on “data recovery” is helpful to you. Some solutions might only apply to using a Mac or a Windows PC for the recovery. Some are free to use, but others might require a nominal payment to recover the data.
