IBC 2024

PostFri Aug 30, 2024 11:10 pm

It's coming up soon. I'm curious what Blackmagic may announce for it. And, I suspect a few things are guaranteed:

1) PYXIS Shipping
2) URSA Cine 12K Shipping.
3) Camera Firmware 8.8 or 9.0 Releases

The Camera Firmware will primarily make public the Beta features from 8.6 and 8.7, while also adding support for the PYXIS and URSA Cine 12K.

Next products that could be announced, or that I'd like to be announced:

A) USB-C Camera Control Video Assists
B) Wireless Video Assists
C) Blackmagic Wireless Lens Control System: Lens Motors and Hand Unit
D) Blackmagic Production Video Monitors of 18" and 24" with built-in Wireless
E) Blackmagic Wireless Video Transmission System

And, in terms of new cameras... none, as they will officially be shipping the cameras mentioned above.

What do you guys think? What IBC 2024 announcements do you think will happen?

I'd be happy with the above tbh. Did we ever get any confirmation the additional anamorphic desqueezes seen in pre-release Pyxis models will be trickling down to the BMCC6K?

Delivery of new cameras as you mentioned would be fine if it happens, but I think they’ll have more products related to broadcast and collaboration with possibly further AI features. I thought Resolve 19 would be released at IBC, but that’s already done.

What I’d enjoy hearing is more forward thinking, hinting at or teasing future plans. Understand BMD rarely tips their hand like they did by announcing the URSA Cine 17K, but more of the same revelations would add fuel to the fire of enthusiasm for their brand. Of course they are cautious so that competitors don’t copy their plans and beat them to the finish line.

Actually, based on the demo PYXIS footage that I just downloaded the Camera Firmware for the PYXIS is Firmware 9.1.

And, now (September 2) the Camera Firmware 9.0 Released for the URSA Cine 12K. I have a strong feeling this means that the URSA Cine will now start shipping to resellers. Exciting times!

I wonder if we'll hear more about their Apple Vision camera Apple kind of teased at the WWDC. Especially since Apple will be releasing their new OS soon.

Hoping to see a mixed input (SDI / HDMI) ATEM Mini Extreme and/or affordable ATEM Mini or 1RU rack switcher supporting 4+ SMPTE 2110 IP inputs to streamline 2110 workflows and take advantage of their 2110 Ethernet switch.

For that matter, a lower-cost 8-port 2110 Ethernet switch would be great too but seems a bit early since the 16-port was introduced only a few months ago at NAB.

If they made this compatible with the 6k FF, it would be perfect for me.
I think I will forgo a Pyxis, not because of anything other than “I already own the 6k FF and I don’t see any image quality improvements.”

Yeah, agreed Adam. Although, I am going to sell some body parts and organs to afford that new $30K price tag on the URSA Cine 17K. That, and some lenses for it. Anyone in need of a Kidney?

A kidney will get you a camera and a slice of the liver will buy a few decent budget lenses.

Based on this I’d say the whole liver will get the UCine17K and some 65mm lenses. Totally worth it.

Tim , sorry for the tangent, but a slice off your liver will regrow in time; removing the whole liver will lead to your death and we can’t afford to lose you!

Oh, too late, I already found a buyer for my brain. I don’t need that anymore. AI will handle everything for me from here on out.

IBC doors opened this morning... if BDM were going to announce anything else, shouldn't there be a Grant Perry video by now?

A lot of products were announced at NAB earlier this year but there were a bunch of announcements at both NAB and IBC last year. I believe the last new ATEM Mini product were announced in 2022 and the competition (Yolobox, OSEE, Magewell) have since released competing products with differentiated features.

Hoping there's still more to come from BDM at IBC!

Did you miss the PYXIS Monitor announcement? What about the Press Release on the URSA Cine 17K Pricing? And Firmware 9.0 and 9.1 dropped this week with support for the URSA Cine 12K and PYXIS respectively.

Look and you’ll find the announcements. They’re a little quieter, but they’re out there.

I have been busy and not following IBC. Is 9.1 going to have all the promises for the BMPCC/BMCC6K firmware upgrade that was supposed to be 8.7 or whatever?

No, that will apparently be a Firmware update labeled 9.2 or 9.3. That was word from a BMD Rep on one of those respective threads about the Beta Firmwares.

8.7 will never exist as a formal release. What is going to happen is that the changes that you guys are seeing in 8.7 will roll into a future release, so at this point it will be a post 9.x release once we are confident that all the issues are addressed.
