SSD Card works in camera, but computer can't see it.

PostFri May 02, 2014 5:16 am

So I've been shooting on the 4K BMPC using a Sandisk Extreme II for a few weeks. It has been working just fine until now. So I generally use an Apricorn Sata Wire Esata to USB 3.0 to transfer the footage from the card and reformat however this time the computer doesn't recognize the card. I am getting the error " the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Obviously I'm a bit panicked. So I put the SSD back into the camera expecting it to be corrupted. Nope, works fine. Playback is great, I can still shoot. But none of my computers are recognizing the card. I'm hoping that its the Sata Wire USB to Sata thing but has anyone had this problem? I've done a bunch of Google searches that turned up plenty of general SSD problems but not this one.

Oh and I'm on a Mac btw.

Thank ye.

I've had a similar issue before. Try connecting the drive to the Mac. Click No when asked to format it.

Now open Disk Utility. See if you can run a disc repair. I found that worked to get the drive mounted and the footage copied. The drive was not very stable tho.

Seems the headers had got damaged. Was back to normal after a format.

It needs to be formatted and assigned a drive letter. If this is Windows 7 get to the Disk Management console by right-clicking Computer, selecting Manage and selecting Disk Management from the pane on the left side. Right click My Computer -> Select Manage-> in the console under storage, click disk manager In the console, you should see the drive. If it's unformatted run the wizard to create a new partition (right click -> new partition)

Becareful in here. It's easy to select the wrong drive. The one you want should be the one with out a drive letter. The properties should give the manufacturer name as well as verification you are about to format the correct drive.

Sometimes in order to format it to exFAT you will need to plug in your HDD dock via USB. As windows will not always let you format an internal drive with exFAT. (eSATA looks like an internal drive to the computer)

EDIT: if you have footage on it, try just assigning a drive letter in the disk manager instead of formatting.

Dunno if this is still relevant, but I had the same problem today with a Samsung SSD T5. It would record on my BMPCC4k without any issues. The computer didn't recognize it though.

My solution:
I used Disk Drill (this program saved me many times). Under Storage Devices I right clicked on the drive and hit "remount drive as read / write".

Worked like a charm.
