BMPCC 4k latest firmware

can someone tell me the latest firmware for the Blackmagic camera 4k and a link to download it please, I have searched on the blackmagic website but only confused with what is only 6k and what is 4k firmware.

The BMPCC4K latest firmware I believe is 8.1. Later updates so far do not apply to the BMPCC4K. The camera has had several updates that greatly enhanced its capabilities from the original firmware.

The cameras originally shipped recorded CinemaDNG; later shipments switched to BRAW around release 6.1 or 6.2. Apparently once you update from CDNG to BRAW, you might be able to go back to CDNG. If you were shipped the camera with the BRAW version, you cannot go back to earlier software.

You just download the latest version of the camera update utility from the BMD support page and it’ll put the appropriate firmware on your camera. No need to find camera specific firmwares.

I can confirm that the BMPCC 4K will only update the software to version 8.1 even if you have a later version of the BM update tool installed.

I have just downloaded the 8.5.1 update (June 2024) and applied it to my camera, and the software version (on the camera) is showing as 8.1

This does include the ability to stabilize BRAW in post using camera gyro data (with the Gyroflow plug-in for Resolve, I understand), which sounds very interesting. One of my main blockers to using the BMPCC 4K hand-held was the lack of image stabilization, and the gyro-based option looks promising. I need to experiment though!

I tried to install that update on my bmcc6k but it did the same thing as for you.
I then installed the current beta and it worked.

I'm unable to update to the latest firmware as well. Black Camera Setup is giving me this page with the NTP that won't set and allow me to update. Anyone familiar with this issue?

Just as a point of reference if the IP address as shown in the screen is 0.0.0.0 it means the IP address has not been assigned by the DHCP server, hence will not connect to anything internet. If you wait a few seconds the IP should be assigned if indeed it’s connected and the NTP field should change and work.

It often difficult to explain but the latest Camera Setup software on our site contains the latest firmware for every camera. Every camera model has its own firmware and version which may or may not match the software version. If no update is prompted when you connect your camera, that means the camera is up to date and no further action needs to be taken. Usually the release notes indicate which cameras will be affected. This is one of the most often asked questions. I hope this helps.

Until BMD changes things such that installing version X of the software results in the camera saying version X is installed these questions will continue. No amount of documentation will stop them.

I understand that version X of the firmware contains several different packages - up to one for each type of camera. What I’m suggesting is that it instead contain a package for every camera even when that package is exactly the same - other than the version number - as the previous version. That way installing version X of the firmware will always result in version X being visible on the camera.

The NTP issue is unrelated to updating. It appears that, at least on the 4K, the camera won’t connect to the network unless directly attached to an Ethernet cable. It can’t connect by just being attached to a computer even if said computer is running the setup program.

This is a significant flaw to me as it requires me to manually enter the date and time. This is exacerbated by the fact that the camera uses a capacitor rather than a battery to maintain the date and thus frequently requires date reentry.

I sure hope BMD addresses this as it’s an extra step that most all other cameras don’t require.

I don't agree. While it might be confusing at first, once you understand how they roll out firmware it is actually very convenient. Especially the fact you don't have to search for specific firmware for your camera. Just download the latest Blackmagic Camera and be assured your camera has the latest firmware available.

I understand that, now that you understand it, you’re happy with the scheme.

All I’m saying is that, since the scheme is unintuitive and the behavior surprising until explained, the large volume of questions about it will continue.

As BMD becomes more successful - which we all hope for - the volume will actually increase.
