Ursa 12k as a slow motion broadcast camera

PostTue Oct 08, 2024 5:56 am

I am wondering how this could work. Is it possible to harness the impressive framerates that this camera can achieve to replace something like a Phantom in a broadcast scenario? I know it doesn't have quite the framerates as a Phantom but think of it as a poor man's Phantom. I'm guessing the fact that it only records in RAW could be an issue. I'm unfamiliar with the exact workflow in a live broadcast when a Phantom is used, but I have worked alongside such a setup so I know it exists.

In super16 mode at 4K the URSA 12K can record up to 240fps... no where near a Phantom... but, B4 lenses can work with the optional mount. (6K is also available in super16 at up to 120fps)

Typical high speed broadcast setups will use 3x3G connections for 180fps or 6x3G for 360 fps. The phases are captured then played sequentially from a server as broadcast cams don’t have inbuilt recorders. I don’t believe the various Phantom’s use this mode as they’re often 1000+ fps. More likely direct camera playback.

Resolve now supports “growing” files specifically for replays through the cloud. I’m fairly sure this works with both the UBG2 and the new 12K Cine cam, don’t think the network fuctionality has been added to the OG12K or 12KOLPF yet.

We used to have a G2 with B4 mount for slowmotion for "offline" broadcast for event television (motorsport). (we offload the footage soon after the races were finished)

If you want to be connected to a broadcast truck for live broadcast, as a slow motion you will need to figureout a workflow to send playback of the footage using a wireless backpack to a replay operator inside the truck.

I know a good collegue of mine who have colaborated to have some basic "1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 memories" to store and playback to a replay OP while keep on shooting but with another camera system.

But it something that blackmagic never created bythemself, and that could be a very great feature for the next URSA Broadcast that's for sure.

Pretty sure it's already here. Blackmagic has developed 2 methods for playout of "growing" files. The first is the Replay function whose limitation is on the wire formats supported by the Hyperdecks or Atem Minis which preclude faster than 60fps. The second is the Cloud Sync functionality introduced in firmware update 8.7 for the UBG2. With Cloud Sync one can import growing files that have an in camera frame rate higher than project frame rate enabling true slo-mo. I don't know if the Cloud Sync files are compatible with Resolves Replay feature tho, the last time I checked this functionality was limited to the Cut page. Still, no reason that it can't be used for Slo-Mo Playout with the appropriate output card.

Good Luck
