Pyxis 6K Canon RF Mount?

PostThu Nov 07, 2024 8:50 am

Hi, I was originally going to send an email, but thought I would post this publicly here instead. I wasn’t able to find this on the forum, so here it goes.

I have a set of Canon RF camera/lenses, and one of the products I would like to eventually get is a box cinema camera so I can have a proper dedicated video camera with interchangeable lenses. I COULD use it for video, but the options on it are very limited, and require a lot of additions that make unwieldy.

This is why I like the idea of eventually getting the Pyxis 6K. When it was announced earlier last year, my state of mind was already ready for it. I immediately fell in love with the concept and decided it’s my favorite concept right now. My problem with this is going to be that I don’t really have any lenses that would fit any of the bodies in this line (except a 150-600mm, not really optimal.) Having to get a full trinity of EF or PL or L-mount lenses would set me back thousands of dollars. EF Lens availability is starting to become a serious issue. I don’t know how much longer they are going to be made any more. I would still be tempted to go L-mount body, but id prefer to stay away from L-mount lenses if I can; and then again same issue for EF on L-mount body, EF Lens availability. No matter what I go with, I am going to have to get another set of lenses.

Then there’s the issue of image stabilization. I also really want to be able to use the lens stabilization feature, and a lot of the lenses out there don’t have it. For the options that I’m looking at and what im trying to do, Canon EF/RF seems to be better in this regard. Sigma doesn’t do well on E-mount/L-mount stabilization availability. Going with RF would directly bypass this problem for me.

RED makes a canon RF mount body, they cost $5000, they are S35, and I was hoping to get a full frame body. The Pyxis just has so much more of a value proposition.

So the question/request in this post is this, when could we reasonably expect that an RF mount version of the Pyxis 6K come out, if ever? I understand there could be issues like IP/patents, but if patents are an issue, why is RED be able to make it but not BMD? If its an issue of engineering, I understand. Its probably going to be a while before I'll be able to get something like this anyways. As of this moment, I haven't seen any serious indicators that BMD will have RF in the short term. Who knows, maybe you are working on it but not able to say anything right now. I just wanted to say something to someone so its at least considered. I'll give a shout out for Sony E-mount too, for anyone thats invested in sony lenses.

If anyone has information to provide on this, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your consideration.

Red paid for it, so pay for a Red.
I doubt we'll ever see one by others before Canon's patent runs out, like EF did. Red may even have acquired exclusive rights, which is what they really like to do.
But then there's China, if you live outside of the U.S. …

Canon RF is patented. Red traded Raw for it. Better to go for L Mount.
