NTP Error when setting date/time on PYXIS

PostTue Nov 12, 2024 7:03 pm

Hey all,

Just picked up my first Blackmagic camera, the Pyxis. I've been trying to set the date and time correctly and can't seem to get it to work.

I've plugged my camera into two different computers visa USB C as well as an iPhone 15 Pro and while it's recognized and I can rename the camera, update the firmware, etc. I can't set the time / date automatically. Even if I set it manually once I power cycle the camera, it resets back to 12/31/1969.

I've factory reset the camera and it didn't fix it sadly. When connected to my iPhone the hotspot sharing status bar never appears either, the only way I know it's connected is through the ethernet page in the settings app.

Any solutions for this?

Thanks!

Okay so I believe I found a solution for half of the issue. In MacOS system settings you have to enable network sharing in the general tab. Probably similar setting somewhere in Windows. Annoying that it doesn't prompt you about that on first plug but whateva.

Second issue still persists, if I power the camera off and on it resets the time back to 12/30/1969. I've called the support line but they said they were unavailable to help and took my email to reach out to later. haven't heard from them but I'll update if I find a solution.

Sounds like the super capacitor BMD is using as a buffer battery does not work.
It is normal for all BMD cameras that after a week on the shelf time and date start getting behind until the super capacitor has lost all power. It gets recharged super fast the next time when you power on the camera. But in your case it seems to do not work at all.

I would RMA the camera. Contact support again and insist on that. Better replace the camera now than later.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks for the reply! I've contacted them about RMAing the camera. In your experience would something like this be covered under the 12 month warranty since I've had the camera for less than a month and it's pretty clearly a manufacturing defect? I'd hate to have to pay out of pocket for this as it's my first BMD product and that'd really sour the whole experience.

That is definitely a case for warranty as it is a manufacturing defect out of the box.
As far as I have read here over many years on this forum, BMD does honor that.

We no longer use a supercap. There is a small rechargeable cell in the camera. I suggest leaving it plugged in for a while and seeing if the cell gets charged up before power cycling.

Thanks for clarification Kristian. Is this the way to go on for the new cameras like the PYXIS or do older models get this in a revision too?
