BMPCC 6K Not Recognizing Lens - No Iris Control

PostMon Aug 31, 2020 4:23 am

I just purchased 4 BMPCC 6ks for our livestream rig. One of the bodies does not recognize any of my lenses. It does not display the IRIS and cannot autofocus. When I connect to the iPhone app, it says there's no lens attached. I can control all the other features of the camera and it appears that the lenses work at their last set aperture but just can't be further adjusted from this particular camera body. All my bodies are updated to the latest firmware as of 8/29/20. I've tried these three lenses with no luck: Sigma 24-70, Canon 24-70, Canon 70-200.

Did I just get a faulty camera body or is there anything I can do to fix this?

You should contact BMD Support Sr yiur Regional Office directly, sounds like a bad camera.

OP, can we have an update on this issue? Having loss of iris control with a BMPCC6k and Sigma 18-35 Art EF.

Not clear whether a firmware update on the lens will fix this. RED issued a firmware update to deal with this.

I just received a couple of used Zeiss ZE lens that were having intermittent iris control issues with my BMPCC 6k.

I got them to work fine by cleaning the flat gold contacts on each of my lenses. I cleaned them in the same way I've cleaned (for decades now) other electronic devices that have gold contacts:

1. Blow and dry brush away any dirt from around the gold contacts (very careful not to brush dirt into the lens itself!) I use the Zeiss lens cleaning kit for this.

2. Clean a common pencil eraser by rubbing it against a cloth or other surface. (I've always used a clean blue jeans pant leg until the entire surface look clean and pink, or whatever color it is.) Note that it shouldn't remain hard and slippery or oxidized — it has to have some grab to it in order to polish the gold.

3. Gently rub the clean eraser over the gold contacts. Use a little pressure, but not too much. Make the entire gold surface look the same: even in color with no dirty oxidized spots.

4. Blow and dry brush again to get any eraser fragments out of the lens.

5. Use a lens cloth with a bit of lens cleaner on it, to wipe away any remaining contaminates on the gold contacts.

6. Repeat if needed.

Note that I ALSO cleaned the SPRING LOADED gold contacts on the camera body itself BUT ONLY BY GENTLY WIPING THEM WITH A SLIGHTLY DAMP LENSES CLEANING CLOTH and then polishing that a bit with a clean lenses cloth. DON'T ALLOW ANY CLEANER, OR ANYTHING ELSE, DROP ONTO YOUR CAMERA SENSOR! You should only need to do that once in a long while?

I've been having the same issue for quite some time and noticed something. When the issue occurs the iris is closed completely. (It closes on its own somehow after shutdown for some reason) Nothing I do will get the BMPCC to recognize the lens again. And any time I restart the camera I can hear what sounds like the Iris trying to open again without success. Now, if I put the lens on my Canon 5D and use it to open the iris all the way. Then place it BACK on the BMPCC, then it will work fine without issue. (until it decides not to work again after a reboot) Not sure if this is an issue with BMPCC's firmware? Lenses work absolutely fine on the Canon.

Also checked the pins and contacts and everything is immaculate on both ends.
