BM App for iPhone Keeps Crashing after @ 18 secs recording

PostSat Dec 28, 2024 12:14 am

Hello, group! New poster here...

Trying to get the BM app running with a new iPhone 16 Pro Max. Exporting to new, attached and formatted Samsung T7 HD so space is not an issue. Records for about 18 seconds then suddenly stops/crashes.

Has this happened to anyone else and do you have any suggestions?

Would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

What if you record internally?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

That seems to work.

Think it might be the USB-C cable I was using not being fast enough? I was using the one that came with the T7 and it crashed. Tried a male-to-male 40 GBps and that didn't crash, but that doesn't fit in my rig.

But does that make sense that it would let me record for 18 seconds with the other one before crashing (instead of crashing right away)?

Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. It's appreciated!

Are you using the supplied USB-C cable?

When I used a USB-C extension cable which was not 3.2 gen 2, it crashed after a few seconds of recording because the cable was too slow.

My Iphone 16 does the same thing trying to record to any external drive. Records fine to internal memory.

Uli,

First of all, thanks for your reply. I thought I replied but don't see it. Internally works and, after shooting today, recording to external with new chord worked MOST of the time. But still had several instances of the app suddenly freezing up for reasons unknown. Thankfully, wasn't a lot (don't think it was overheating as it wasn't a hot day).

Walter,

Did you format the disk for iOS first? I read somewhere else about it not working -- even if disk is supposed to be able to be recorded to out of the box -- unless it's been erased/formatted specifically for Mac.

Overheating would give you a clear message on the phone.
But with all the high frequencies around, I'd get a cable as short as possible. I have my SSD formatted for APFS, but on the computer. Formatting in the recoding device rather applies to other cameras, not phones.

T7 Touch or Shield? If you pull more than 5W of power, it will shut down. Found that out with my Sandisk Extreme. The T5 is good, and I use a Crucial X9 where I can get 60+ minutes continuous recording. iPhone will get rather warm to the touch as will the drive. It also eats battery like no tomorrow. Anandtech still has some old articles up where they measure peak wattage for SSDs. Not sure anyone else is doing that anymore. I attach the X9 to the back with a HiWe for MagSafe Wallet and a Afterplug Short USB4 Cable (40Gbps). Just don’t leave it plugged in if not recording, because there is still a draw. This means you will need to reset the Media settings in BMC if you leave it open and unplug/replug SSD.
