BMPCC 4k and old Metabone speed booster

PostTue Sep 08, 2020 7:20 am

Hi

I'm considering the BMPCC 4k and I have a question about it's compatibility with Speed booster. I see online references to 0.71 Ultra and 0.64 XL boosters. The one I bought long time ago for my BMPCC (OG) is just labeled "N/F - M43" Speed booster (I got it for my Sigma 18-35mm with Nikon mount). I have trouble finding info about it, but so far I have found it to be a 0.71 booster. My question is if there are some issues with using it on the BMPCC 4k. It works fine on the BMPCC (OG). I mean if there is a glass element that would be in the way and that one need the newer speed boosters?

Thanks in advance!

If you have the "generic" Nikon to M43 speedbooster, it will work with the Pocket 4K. I use the 0.64 XL version.

There is also a model specifically for the old Pocket Cinema Camera (https://metabones.com/products/details/ ... -BMPCC-BM1). That would not work as is stated on the product page.

Yes, the OP has the original Metabones MFT to Nikon F Speed Booster, woeks with any MFT camera mount camera. That said, wide angle lenses will tend to be soft wide open, especially the Sigma zoom at 18mm.

Thanks!

Yes I have the generic, not the BMPCC versions. Why is it soft for 18mm wide open? Would it not be soft regardless of aperture? Do you mean vignetting or soft corners?

You may see both slight vignette and soft corners. Doesn't bother me, especially considering how razor thin the focal plane is that open.

the BMPCC 4k speedbooster has a special glass, which is exactly adapted
to the sensor of the pocket.

a generic speedbooster is just not designed for the format
of the pocket 4k sensor and can only be used with restrictions!

The metabones M43 to EF speedboosters work absolutely fine with the P4k. The special P4k adapter just improves the edge softness a bit with wide lenses with non retro focus optical designs.

The BMD specific SB is designed to correct for the thinner sensor cover glass used by BMD, so critical focus is improved and as previously stated edge sharpness is improved. For general shooting the differ is minor. For ultra WA or fast f/stop lenses, where critical edge focus is important, then the BMD specific SB is the better choice.

Not sure what 'critical focus' is exactly but in the center of the image where the light rays are perpendicular to the cover glass and sensor there will be no difference with either adapter.

The original SpeedBooster is limited in the size of the image circle as it was designed for a smaller sensor (crop 2.88x). Metabones recommends you use the new focal reducers specifically designed for the larger BMPCC4K ‘mirrorless’ sensor with a crop 1.9x. This will provide best results over the full frame.

The P4k requires a smaller lens projection circle than the M43 standard as it's only slightly wider but a lot thinner in the vertical aspect ratio so the new metabones speed boosters don't have any advantage in this aspect - it's all to do with the sensor cover glass thickness

Thanks!
I'm sure they do with the prices on the new speedboosters :-)

Seems getting my BMPCC4K will take a long time (the importer didn't have any estimate on delivery still), so I'll wait.to.test out the old speedbooster when I get it.

Good plan to test with what you have. If it’s working well, you save a bundle. Good luck getting the camera sooner than later. I’ve been so very pleased with the BMPCC4K, especially thanks as to the firmware updates that Kristian Lam’s team implemented. Close to perfection and so flexible in different use cases. Best value!

If you are unhappy with the overpriced (and under engineered) metabones offerings there are several other much cheaper alternatives from the likes of Viltrox that can do a descent job. Just to be clear - the speedbooster for the original BMPCC will not work on the BMPCC 4K.

Kim Janson wrote:"the speedbooster for the original BMPCC will not work on the BMPCC 4K." I basically agree and would recommend it, but what I tested it fits the camera, and seems to be ok for FHD (not 4 K though)

Yes when FHD is enabled it's a sensor crop which will be within the projected image circle.

So that means that the Metabones Speedbooster designed specifically for the BMPCC OG will work on the BMPCC 4K in Full HD mode and 2.5k mode correct?

Selling both a 0.58 and 0.64 Metabones MFT to Nikon Speedbooster if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to buying new. Based in EU
