Sun Hood / BMPC4k

PostSun Jan 12, 2025 2:22 am

Can anyone recommend a sunhood or two for a blackmagic pocket cam 4k user? I'm looking all over the internet and all I can find is garbage.

thanks :)

These are not garbage, neither are they cheap: https://kinotehnik.com/lcdvf/

Used to have one for my org. BMPCC, and it worked well. You stick a magnetic frame to the monitor and just clip it on. Just be careful not to hold the camera by it!

The nice thing was using one when operating from the shoulder. It was establishing a third point of contact and bringing the camera into a good position with a shoulder support.

Uli, did you ever encounter problems with fogging? I have Zacuto's version of this viewfinder and it's unusable after a few minutes as the glass fogs up and I can't see anything through it. Apparently they used anti-fog glass in a later version. I've tried using anti-fog wipes but they don't solve the problem.

Can't say, I've never used it in the cold.

Mine fogs up in most conditions; the worst was at an indoor concert in a bar. Maybe the humidity in there was high with all the people, but the viewfinder was usable for less than 5 minutes.

I've used the SmallRig for several years and it works fine. A little over US$40.

I've been using the Kinotehnik for a couple years now. It's worth the money (and even has a lifetime warranty).

It comes with a red felt pad for the eyecup. Using that goes a long way towards reducing fogging.

Thanks for confirming, Jim. I have always kept that on, and as already stated, it didn't fog.
I now remember we were once shooting at night in the mountains, and it was not really warm.

Do you mean this one? It's 2 pieces, full sunhood and half... There's only 1 review on it and it was 1 star because the velcro wasn't working properly. Maybe they just attached it wrong, who knows. and it's just 1 review... But I'm thinking this is what you're talking about because it's $40.

If I'm following this right, the item you buy is not the whole item and you have to use a 3D printer to complete the item? I don't have access to a 3D printer which is why I'm asking. I think I'm following this video right lol

The video does suggest that you get a "maker space" to print it for you.

I use both the Tilta and the LCDVF. They are good products. The LCDVF is for handheld, providing 3-point stability with both hands and head. Excellent in daylight, as you don't have to worry about screen brightness or external monitor. The Tilta sunhood is for common usage, providing a good view from above the camera because of the upright angle. Very well thought out. One can use the sunhood alone, or add the fabric with velcro, with which one has a real good sight of the camera display in daylight. The Tilta sunhood however needs the Tilta cage for attachment. One thing to consider. I can recommend the Tilta cage for other advantages. It is the best for save cable management, including external T5 SSD.

The only thing that does not quite fit is, that the Tilta sunhood is not quite flush with the camera, because I have the LCDVF magnet frame on the camera. But it's not a problem. Just a slight inconvenience. The Tilta sunhood works alright, even if there is a slight gap below.

I emailed a local marker space, maybe I can get a price quote, I'm not sure how this works. I have this feeling it's going to be bloody expensive (I just associate that with anything 3d printing) but I have to see because maybe I'm wrong.

You don't think this would work with the Smallrig cage?

no. The Tilta sunhood only fits to the Tilta cage.

For years I had the olive coloured Smallrig cage. Very good. Once I slipped and fell, and the bottom attachment plate of the cage was broken. Impossible to repair. The cage is still intact, but no more secure attachment with the P4k. So I had to get a new cage. And the choice was Tilta. Because of the cable management. However, the Tilta cage has no Nato rails, and the screw threads on the top are not practical for my purposes. I had to buy small Nato rail accessories for Follow Focus and top handle. Not ideal, but solvable. There is a Tilta top handle that fits of course, but I prefer the Smallrig one with wood. It's a bit difficult to mix two brands, but in the end I'm quite happy with this Tilta cage.

i just bought a Smallrig cage, supposed to be here in 4 days so we'll see if it works like I need it to and I believe it will... I just need to find a hood that works with it and one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm waiting to hear back from this 3d printing company on how much it costs for the part that was mentioned in a previous post. I have a feeling it'll be too much so it seems like I'd be down to 1 option.

I have been using the SmallRig cage which conveniently let the SmallRig sun shade/hood fit nicely with it. I have been using this setup for years now on the BMPCC6K and it works well for me. It’s not a complete hood like the ones from Hoodman, however HM doesn’t make them for smaller cams. On the URSA, I prefer the Hoodman. Tilt makes sun shades that works with their cages as well.

There are the LCDVF as mentioned above. This has the best sun screen of all. I have tried them on the BMPCC6K but they are a bit hard to align and stay on. And when they do (which I had to make a bracket for attaching it on the 1/4-20 thread mount on top of the camera, it worked but the angle of view from the diopter causes a vignette around the image when viewing. It’s also flimsy especially with how it is mounted coz it’s not designed right for the BMPCC but rather for other DSLR display. But if you’re okay with that, it’s another option.

It sounds like I should start with the smallrig shade/hood and see if that works out... my cage should be here tomorrow so I'll order it today and we'll see what happens.

I know about it but I am a person who does not want to cannibalize my equipment. I do my very best to keep it as original as possible so the next owner gets them like “new” as the day it came out of the box. 8-)

sell and then rebuy? what's your next camera?

I don't plan on selling the BMPC4k even though I'm not in love with it. Just lose too much money to justify it so I don't want to live a life of annoyance and just cut those things off. You know how they are... cumbersome. They don't fit perfect, you're smashing them in, you're pulling your hair out, etc ;)

You must have gotten this hood back in the day? I went to the Smallrig website and couldn't find it... so I wrote them an email:

smallrig@smallrig.com

7:34 AM (30 minutes ago)

to me

Dear Anthony,

Thanks for your message.

We will report the problem of menu submission page to the technicians for follow-up.

Sorry, we don't have sunhood suitable for BMPC4k at present.

But we will record your product suggestion.

Yes, it’s been a while and the shades were like $25 with the attachment. But I ordered 1 with the attachment and 3 more just the shades which costs like $12 each just to have spares.

Unfortunately it’s been discontinued- from their website. It’s a pretty good product but probably didn’t sell well. Here’s the link on smallrig…
https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-sun-h ... -2299.html

But if you really want it, someone is selling them on eBay but he’s asking for almost twice what it was.

Good luck.

It must have doubled because it's discontinued, not sure why else it would.
