BMCC Purple Screen

PostMon Jun 30, 2014 10:00 am

Hi,

After a few weeks of not turning on the BMCC (the 2.5K), I noticed a huge problem in the LCD display: all the whites were replaced by shades of purple. It appears only on the LCD screen, the footage is perfect and shows no purple at all. The color purple also replaces all the whites in the Menu buttons.

Really weird and charging the camera or updating the software didn't do anything.

Do you have any advice?

Yeah, I'd call support & maybe do a rollback+reinstall on the firmware (install 1.7-->re-upgrade to 1.8).

I am talking about the fact that you dudes didn't even bother to refer him to the company support page or even a place he can properly get something like this fixed UNTIL someone brought it up. You clearly saw it?!

Thanks for the replies.

I tried contacting support and just got an answer.

I just did the rollback from 1.8 to 1.7 to 1.8, it looks unstable when I turn it on and then back to purple.

I think I'm just gonna go ahead and send it back so they can fix it - it seems to be a problem that appears from time to time and needs replacement.

Hey man, I've got some bad news for you...your camera's LVDS cable is getting shredded inside of the camera body.

The exact same issue happened to me last year. I started getting purple highlights. After a little while they went away. A couple of weeks later they came back with a vengeance, and eventually the monitor just failed to come on. My camera was just outside of warranty so Blackmagic wouldn't do anything about it.

I had an engineer at work take it apart to see if he could find the source of the problem and he discovered it immediately. The wide, thin LVDS cable that runs the monitor had been pinched in between other internal camera components when the camera was manufactured (total manufacturing error) and over time the friction caused the cable to become damaged.

I reached out to BM again and explained the issue. I asked them to send me another LVDS cable, or to give me the make and model so that I could source one myself. They told me that I had to buy a whole new display from them in order to get it repaired.

Needless to say, I was not impressed. This was the first service issue I've had with a Blackmagic product and I feel like it was handled poorly, especially given that it was a manufacturing flaw in the first place. Now, I don't believe that everyone is at risk of experiencing this problem since every camera is assembled slightly differently, but it looks like there's at least 2 of us. The least they could do would be to replace the LVDS cable.

Really sorry to see this happen, but BMD support is always awesome. Give them a call and they will help you out—potentially sending you a camera before you send yours back to them if you ask.

Firmware 1.8
I keep seeing some users talk about 1.8 like it's the version they use. Why? The current version for the BMCC is 2.1 and for the BMPC 2.4. Why are people still using version 1.8? I don't get it. Maybe I missed something...

Good day! Can anyone tell me what cable we are talking about, what it looks like and where it is located?. This is the cable shown in the photo and which is most likely not sold separately?
