SSD external HD and BMPC4k are not getting along

PostSun Jan 26, 2025 3:56 pm

I have a BMPC4k and recently bought a Samsung 2TB T7 Portable SSD and they're not working together.

I try recording in Quality Q0, it records for 1 second. I record in Bitrate 12:1, it records for 1 second. The camera records just fine on an SD card @ Quality Q0, so the only thing that I could think of was the USB C cord going from the camera to the HD. It's a USB 2.0 and the specs say up to 480mb/s. I'm thinking this cord is the issue because of the graphic I attached. I think all I need to do is get a USB-C 3.2 cord and I would be fine?

The HD reads at 1050 and writes at 1k.

If that is not the T7 "Shield" version, it's known to be incompatible.
Why didn't you buy one from the official list by BM? They are here for all their cameras (middle column):

It's not the shield version, it's just the "regular"
I didn't think to go to the site because why would an external HD not work with the camera? The only reason I can think of it that's it's 2.0.

I know it's the cord now, the USB-C to USB-C cord that came with the SSD allows filming continuously at QO. So if I get a 3.2 cord everything should work fine. I don't understand why I would need a shield drive vs regular.

Hello,
I own 4 Samsung T7 2 To "regular" SSD and they work perfectly well with all the available settings since 2 years.
But I had a problem with a "weak" USB-C cable, have you try to change it?

Just a heads up that 480Mb/s and 480MB/s is not the same.
USB 2.0 is rated for 480Mbit/s / 60MByte/s.
USB-C 3.2 (gen1) is rated for 5000Mbit/s / 625MByte/s.

Then the problem becomes quite obvious :D
