Pyxis recording format

PostMon Feb 03, 2025 11:04 pm

So I Just did a musicvideoproject with the new Pyxis, but I had one problem. I wanted to record shots with scratch audio but in higher frame rate. To be exact in 6K DCI 17:9 in 48fps. However you can only record in 48fps by switching on the off-speed option. Wouldn't be a problem if you could also just up the Project Framerate to 48fps, so the Playback would be in realtime synced with scratch audio. But this is not the case. You can only go up to max 30fps with the project frame rate. So Playback is slowed down and audio is not synced.
Does anyone know a fix for this or does Blackmagic gonna update the firmware to have the option to increase the project frame rate.

Been looking through everything, but nobody seems to address this issue.

Pyxis recording format

It may not be the solution you want, but I recommend you record external audio and not rely on scratch audio if you are going to run the camera at 48 fps. I think you can use Timecode sync for the 48 fps video and the audio on the external recorder but I have not done that to verify.

Will that work for you?

Edit
What will be the frame rate of your deliverables from your captured 48 fps video and synced audio?

Yeah that would be a solution, but it's kind of a hassle recording externally because I just need the audio for syncing with the song of the music video. The final video is gonna be exported in 24fps.

As I mentioned I haven’t done this slow motion playback for a music video in the many music videos I do. I’m trying to think what I’d do with the timeline for your deliverable.

I can’t seem to think beyond this idea: if you record audio at 48 fps for the portions of the video that are going to playback in slow motion, the pitch of the audio is going to be half what it should be. If you record the audio at 24 fps then the pitch is correct on playback but the music plays back in half the time of your slow motion visuals. That’s fine if the slow motion is used sparingly for visual emphasis of a particular moment such as a visual of the singer or the end of an impressive riff. So no need to record audio in 48 fps as your 24 fps audio will continue to play properly as the visuals are temporarily running slow.

How do you think the 48 fps audio will playback with the slow motion visuals. When I’ve used a brief speed ramp to slow or effectively ‘hold’ my visuals I still had the normal audio under that. In my case, there was no music or dialogue so it worked. I’d need to read the Resolve manual for pitch control to see if I’m missing a technique.
