Product Request - Pyxis Side Handle

PostThu Jan 09, 2025 2:38 pm

With the Pyxis monitor coming soon, there's one more thing we need to round out the camera... a Side Handle designed by Blackmagic. Other handles can do Run/Stop via the usb-c. But I think Blackmagic could make a better one. Something like the Ronin 4D grip would be awesome. Multiple/programable function buttons, Run/Stop, and scroll wheel for various adjustments (basically the controls by the pocket camera grip). It should also have hand strap and definitely some sort of press to rotate feature.

The goal or benefit of this would be the ability to operate the camera without having to think about operating the camera. It would make most changes done by muscle memory. When on you're on the move, doing more documentary style filming, having to stop and change settings can really get tedious and ruin the creative flow or even cause you to miss a shot. I think the Pyxis monitor will help with this, but it still means stopping or taking a hand off the camera to change a setting. Sometimes I'll toggle on and off false color several times in a shoot and I'm constantly hunting for the function button on the Pyxis. Thanks for what you guys do there at Blackmagic, keep up the good work!

Great idea... have always been put off by the USB cable thing, but if they made a Bluetooth one that would be amazing

Other handles can do Run/Stop via the usb-c.

Do you know specifically which USB-C handles will work with the PYXIS? I haven’t had any luck with the
Smallrig. Wouldn’t I need something that covered LANC to a run/stop signal over USB-C?

I'm using the DJI Focus Pro, that connects via BlueTooth to the Pyxis.

The problem with Bluetooth and the Pyxis is that only one device can connect, so if I have my DJI focus pro handle connected, so I can use the record button, I can’t use the iPad app to control the camera. So if the do make a 1st party handle, it should plug into the viewfinder usb port and then allow you to plug the EVF or Pyxis monitor into it avoiding Bluetooth.

Apparently you can connect the DJI focus pro handle to the Pyxis using a USB-C cable, rather than using Bluetooth.

Would I need to get the DJI transmission cable hub? right now I don't have a spare USB port. One is used for the Pyxis monitor and the other for an SSD.

I'm not sure about that. But you could use CFEXpress Cards instead of SSD. The write speed is apparently much faster.

Agree. Those camera dual ports are a precious commodity. And you have more safety and flexibility using fast internal media; granted the SSD is an economical option.

Amazes me that an iPhone Pro Max doesn’t have two connections. It seems an obvious need for a professional phone.

Has anyone ever tried the Tilta Nucleus Nano II Control Handle Grip? Does its REC trigger button support the Pyxis?
