Impossible BMPCC 4K firmware update

PostMon May 30, 2022 4:53 pm

Hi,
I own a BMPCC 4K, and the firmware is 5.2
I've tried to update to firmware 7.7.3 (the latest), and I get an error: it starts by saying "Updating…" but remains stuck at 0% and after 2 minutes, it says "Update failed".
I was wondering if the 7.7.3 was too advanced compared to 5.2, so I've tried to upgrade to the version that seems the following of 5.2 : 6.0 ; then it says "firmware is up to date". If I try to update to 6.1, I have the same "failed" message.
What's going on here?
Camera is connected to sector, card is removed, no lens is attached…
Thanks for your help.

Hi, try this:

1. Uninstall all versions of Blackmagic Camera Updater on your Windows machine.
2. Reboot

3. Install v7.7.3 onto your computer

4. Ensure camera is not connected via USB.
5. Hold down focus button while powering on camera. It will start up with a black screen.
6. Connect camera to computer via USB. (You will need USB 2.0 since you’re on v5.2)

7. Run the Blackmagic Camera Setup again

See if this helps.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I'm on a recent Macbook pro that only has USB-C ports.
I've tried what you've described, with no luck.
One problem is that when I power on camera while pressing the focus button (the one on the back of the camera with a cross, below the iris button), the camera does not start up, nothing happens.
Therefore I have no reaction when I try to run the setup.
What could I try now?
Thanks.

Just in case you are using a mount adapter on the camera: remove it and then try the procedure again.

Else:
I am afraid you are a bit in an odd position with that very old firmware and the recent MacBook.
There is a long thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=87063

And the last post from Kim in that thread about the cables might be useful:
viewtopic.php?p=768229#p768229

And this thread here might be helpful too:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=106925&p=591243

As I do not have a MacBook unfortunately I am not able to give better advice here.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Not sure if it will help, but on the BMD Support webpage, scroll down to find release 7.3 firmware update as that is the latest general release for the camera. If you update it, you’ll find BRAW has replaced CinemaDNG.

If that’s okay with you, fine. If you do not want BRAW then try an earlier release such as 6.0 or 6.1, but review the Readme with the update to ensure it’s not the release that introduces BRAW to the camera.

I might be your cable.

The message I kept getting: "Update Failed. Please check your connections and try again."

I was using a charging cable (USB-A to USB-C), so I switched to a more data-capable cable and boom, I'm in.
