Playing around with Pyxis Minimalist Rig

PostFri Apr 11, 2025 3:53 pm

So I had a family thing this past weekend and realized it would be nice to grab the Pyxis instead of my Sony camcorder.

I grabbed my unused Tilta Lidar handle bracket, top handle from my son's camera, nato clamp and a spare nato rail. I don't trust pulling on the nato rails that hang down from my Shape cage since this isn't the angle they were designed for and there is some flex. The Tilta Lidar handle bracket is very thick and doesn't really flex.

So here it is... I could obviously take the case and baseplate off, but then grabbing the camera and doing a minimal rig on the fly is more intrusive.

With this setup, you shoot in opengate, use the built-in LCD on the Pyxis and crop and rotate the images in post. Would be great in the future if Blackmagic supported rotating the image in camera, but this is obviously not an intended use case of the Pyxis.

Understandable, but one downside may be overheating of the sensor since the hot air won’t vent as easily. Perhaps okay up to 24-30 fps. A future Pyxis might include a hinged door and a rotating monitor like the Cine 12K (or like my UM4.6K) but that increases the cost.

Didn't have an issue with the 6k running for a full battery, but I guess we will see what happens with the 12k. I don't think I'll be getting a 12k till 2026, I need to get my money's worth on the Pyxis 6k because I almost never sell any gear, they just become hand-me-downs to my kids or other family.

Nice. I’m waiting another year and trying to hoard cash until then (which isn’t easy as you know) by which time I’ll decide which Super35 zoom lens will be best: Tokina 25-75mm budget zoom or DZOfilm Tango 18-90mm not quite so budget zoom. I really want the 5x zoom but the 3x zoom has a 36mm image circle which will be helpful shooting 9K while the Tango has 31.5mm image circle that will slightly vignette on 9K 3:2.
