Cine Ursa 12k FL freezing and screen glitch

PostWed Apr 16, 2025 10:30 pm

I just got the cine ursa 12k LF body with 8TB media module and v mount plate. Ive tested this with both a 28v and 14.8v v mount battery with same results...

When NOT recording, just digging around in the menus, if the camera is set to 12k 3:1 compression, after about 7 mins 20 secs, the camera freezes (stops responding) and the screen will glitch (vertical bars/stripes across all screens). I cant turn off the camera. I have to pull the power source. If I have it in 12k 8:1 or higher compression, or anything lower than 12k 3:1, it works with no issues.

When recording, 12k 3:1 isn't really an option. I tested with 12k 8:1 compression, 3:2 open gate at 60 fps, and it locked up and screens glitched after 5 mins. Setting it to 12:1 compression or 18:1 works in 12k. I was able to record longer than 15 mins when I stopped the recordings. Lower resolutions seem fine I tested with 9k 3:1 compression 3:2 open gate highest frame rate and it was fine for over 15 mins. Same with 8k.

After testing different combinations of resolutions and compressions (about of hour of testing), I retested 12k 8:1 compression 3:2 open gate with 60 FPS and it recorded this time just fine (no lock up). At all times the temperature of the air coming out of the top of the camera is warm (not hot). The temperature in my house is 65 degrees F. The. camera came with v9.2.2 and I updated to v9.3.1 but it has the same issue. If its an over heating issue, it happens fast and before the temp of the air coming out of the camera is even warm when testing from a cold start.

I'm not sure what the issue is. The fan on the camera is spinning. I have tried sandwiching the camera between two 120mm fans spinning at full speed in a push pull combination. It still has this issue with the highest 12k date rates (3:1 compression, 3:2 open gate, 24+ fps).

Anyone else experiencing this? I submitted an email to support but no response yet... The attached screen shot is a screen grab from a recording of the cine ursa screens glitching (both flip out and AC/right side screens)

Before to receive my B-mount plate, I used the v-mount with a neweer battery.
I recorded at 25fps, 12K 3:2 opengate, 8:1 compression without issue.
Now, with B-mount, I recorded 224fps, 12k 2.4:1, 8:1 compression without issue (about 10 time a record of 1min and pause of 1 min).

I will test tonight
- 12k 8:1 compression, 3:2 open gate at 60 fps
- Navigate through the menus with 12k 3:1 compression

and send the result here

This isn’t normal behaviour. You should be retuning and switching the camera if it’s new with your vendor.

Update it. Saw on Facebook some others had that issue but after they updated it it never happened again.

I tested to navigate through all the menus during 10 minutes without recording and with parameters 12k, 3:2 opengate, 3:1 compression. No freeze, no glitch. all was ok (camera was powered by B-mount)

I tested to record 12k, open gate 3:2, 8:1 compression, 60fps during 10 minutes. No freeze, no glitch. All was ok (camera was powered by B-mount and recorded on SSD module). I navigate through menu during recording without issue.

Temperature in room was about 22°C. camera was not hot, just a little warm.
Firmware was 9.3.1 like your.

Did you record with CF or with SSD module like me ?

I don't have the 24v AC adapter because its back ordered until the end of time. I have tested with both the CF express module and the 8TB module. Both exhibit the same issue.

I tried recording again in 12k 3:2 open gate, 24 FPS and 3:1 compression. The camera locked up after about 4 minutes of recording. I had to pull the battery to shut it off. I put the battery back on and turned the camera back on. I was messing around with settings for awhile (maybe 10 minutes or so) and noticed the camera didn't lock up. It was locking up before (from a cold start) when set to 12k 3:2 open gate with 3:1 compression after about 7 mins of not recording. I decided to try recording now that the camera had a chance to warm up. I was able to record 12k 3:2 open gate 24 FPS at 3:1 compression for over 15 minutes.

So, my camera has to stretch/warm up before running otherwise it pulls a muscle?

I haven't returned it because its back ordered until June and I wont get a replacement for a long time. If I return it and reorder from somewhere else, I get to pay the new tariffs on it.

I was hoping it is a software bug but it seems to be an over heating issue. As in, if it warms up too fast, it freezes. I don't know what to do and I haven't heard back from blackmagic support on this.

Very strange; hopefully this is temporary. At least you’ve discovered a workaround. But it does sound risky. If this doesn’t seem a safe way going forward, you might send it back while under warranty when supply has settled down.

I have done further testing and it doesn't matter what resolution, frame rate, compression etc when recording from a cold start. I tried 8k 3:2 3:1 compression 24 FPS and it locks up just after 4 mins. I even tried the lowest settings of 4k 16:9 24 FPS and constant quality Q5. It still locks up just after 4 mins from a cold start. Only this time, the screens didn't glitch out. It looks like the sensor just stopped recording (all black) as if I put the lens cap on. I can see all the controls, there is an exclamation point on the record button on screen and the rec buttons are lit up and flashing on the body. After about 5 secs of this, the camera stops responding. I cant shut it off. I had to pull the battery. I immediately put the battery back on, turned the camera on, set it to the highest settings (12k, 3:2, 3:1 compression, and only 245 FPS) and I was able to record for over 25 mins.

I installed v9.5 of blackmagic camera setup but v9.5 doesn't have any updates for the cine ursa 12k... So, still on v9.3.1 in camera os (Version 9.3.1, Build c7d21f19)

Cine Ursa 12k FL freezing and screen glitch

PostFri Apr 18, 2025 8:28 pm

That exclamation mark indicates the camera stopped recording to your card or drive because of a dropped frame. Normally you would see that within a few minutes at most. Normally it wouldn’t go away because the camera is warmed up. First try to address what is causing the dropped frame.

Your media shouldn’t be a problem as long as it’s inserted properly, given you are using the very capable 8 TB media module.

I’d talk to BMD Support asking for an RMA to return the camera including the media.
