URSA FIZ Motor Control & Focus Marks

PostFri May 02, 2025 2:27 am

This may just need to be a new product request at this point. I have checked into this and it doesn't seem any of the third party FIZ systems will allow you to use a Mark Button on the FIZ and have it make a new mark on the URSA Cine. Thus, it feels like Blackmagic added this feature with intention to make their own FIZ. Or, third party manufacturers need to work with Blackmagic to implement this functionality.

Take the Nucleus M II. It has the Mark and Delete Buttons on the previous Nucleus. However, it does marks internally only. It will not communicate to the URSA Cine that those "Marks" should be added at that focus position of the URSA AC Screen Interface. Teradek seems to have the same response regarding that level of communication.

My hope is that by IBC Blackmagic announces a concrete plan for expanding this function. I feel like a 1st AC works wirelessly the most these days. Thus it makes sense that a FIZ should be able to communicate with the camera in this way. I'm curious even still if the REST API can come into play. If that's how a FIZ needs to connect to the camera instead of Bluetooth.

Either way, the response Tilta told me was plain: this feature doesn't do that with the camera. So I know Tilta can't add Focus Marks to the URSA Cine Interface with its buttons.

And, if Blackmagic was to make their own FIZ system I would hope that a 7" Wireless PYXIS Monitor may be a part of the plan as the monitor you can attach to the top of the FIZ. I feel like a 7" Monitor could have room for a USB-C Video Out Pass-Through that could potentially attach to larger Blackmagic Monitors. But that's a hint of ideas for future designs. Mainly the 7" Wireless PYXIS Monitor should be the focus first.

If some of this can't be done by IBC then I would hope NAB next year to be surprised with these advancements. Even if they announce working use of the FIZ Focus Mark Add and Delete Functionality for the third party manufacturers I'd take it. Yet I feel like there is a lot of potential in a Blackmagic made product.
