Windows 11 tell me - format the SD card

PostFri Jun 27, 2025 3:14 am

Dear All,

I recorded footage from my Blackmagic 4k camera, but cannot download the footage to my Windows 11 computer. When I insert the SD card, it says "format the SD card". But when I insert the SD card into the camera, I can see the footage. Then I tried using a USB-C cable through the camera, but the folder showed empty when I connected it to the computer. I'm very worried as I have 2 hours of school recording of an event. How can I download the file to my Windows 11 computer? Appreciate anyone's input and help.

May be you formatted as card in a hfs+ file system which is a Apple File System.
You can use some free tools like hfs explorer to read and download the card.
My suggest is to invest 15$ to paragon hfs+, it’s a driver to read and write on hfs+ support like native under windows.

I not annoying with tech details but … exFat is the worst file system you can use under windows for large file video like this, my suggest is to use ever HFS salso under windows. In case of problems you can recover easily file from support than ExFat which is an old file system developed for WinCe and causes of a lots of video file loss.

You took the disk out too fast?

Run DSKCHK <drive letter> /f

from a command prompt and it should fix it.

But you said you can see it on the camera.. You probably did have it formatted for MacOS. I would do the solution from the previous poster.

If the SD card was formatted in HFS+, Windows won’t read it and will ask to format. Don’t do that, it’ll erase the footage.

Try HFSExplorer or Paragon HFS+ to access the files. Also, when using USB-C, check the camera’s connection mode, some modes don’t show files properly. A card reader with HFS+ support might help too.

I recommend using MacDrive. The latest pro version includes support for AFS+, making it a pretty much universal mac media reader, and OWC customer service has been pretty good.

Buy one license, move it when you upgrade your computer, and pay for new versions whenever you feel like it; the old one will keep working even if you don't, you just don't get the newest features. So far, most of the version upgrades add support for new file systems that didn't exist at the time of the previous release in my experience, so new versions come slowly.
