False color help for colorblind

PostMon Jun 30, 2025 11:32 pm

I have never really used false color for any of my cameras, mainly because it’s difficult because I’m colorblind. Does anyone have and tips or tricks that might help in using it? I assume I could make a lut that could assign specific colors in a way that makes the information clearer for how I see colors, but also don’t want to have to be swapping between luts in camera. Has anyone else had this problem and come up with a usable solution? Thanks.

Do you currently have the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G 7” external monitor?

What exactly is your problem with colors?
I have a friend who only some colors are the same for him, he is not color blind in the classical sense, thanks to him I found out that there are many variations of color blindness and so there are different ways to handle this.
Theoretically, if you can load a lut on your device you could create something that gives you the right level of information from contrasts, without going through colors or going through colors that will be different or distinguishable for you.

Why not just want to read a histogram or traditional waveform?

That’s what I was leading up to. The waveforms are very good on the BMVA12G7 and you can load a custom LUT to better distinguish red and green.

That’s what I generally do, and get good results. I was just interested in adding a tool in my arsenal, but I guess it’s not super necessary ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m what people would call red-green colorblind. Because of that I feel like blue and purple, as well as red, green, grey, and yellow can be very difficult to distinguish, especially in the form which they are presented in false color (small patches in very close proximity to each other). The lut idea is solid, I’m just wondering if it’s worth it at this point since I’ve gotten well practiced in exposing other ways.

ok, you are like my friend :-D
to me the only way to have false color visible for you is the custom lut with correct color that suggest you the right luminance

That would be a popular LUT as there are many colour-blind shooters. You get to innovate something that would be very useful. Depending on what you come up with, the results might be popular with people who are not colour blind.
