BMMCC - normal noise or FPN?

PostTue Apr 05, 2016 1:03 pm

Hi all,
Attached are two stills from a quick lighting test and I am wondering if what I am seeing, especially on the right side of the frame in the wide shot, is the dreaded FPN or just normal noise for a low light shot on this particular camera. I shot with one 100W incandescent bulb at 800 ISO, wide open. Didn't lift the shadows or mids at all in post, just the highlights a bit. Any opinions?

Might be a scaling issue within resolve? Did you have this on export? If not, try render it out and see it's still present.

What is a BMMCC? These abbreviated names are getting confusing now.

That looks to me like a scaling issue. Was this viewed at 100%? Was it an export from a 1080p timeline or is it a screen shot of the Resolve viewer in the UI?

i saw similar pattern on the lens flare in the one of the youtube test videos. but it was more like compression artifact.
you better post raw file here to understand the problem

Are these screengrabs ?

Try actually rendering the image out 1:1 and then seeing if it's still there ?

Yes, these are screengrabs taken from inside Resolve (they weren't scaled).
I will render out more images when I get home from work.
Thanks.

99% sure they won't be in your rendered final output.

Also try changing the Monitor scaling mode in the master project settings. Change it from Basic to Bilinear.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the tip! That seemed to help quite a bit but the grid pattern, for lack of a better word, is still visible. I will export some clips from Resovle, as JB suggested, and see if that helps too. I haven't had the chance to get around to it yet but I will try later on and upload some more pix.

The grid pattern is a well known scaling issue.

Other cameras like the Sony F55 suffer the same issue. It's actually more a post issue. Also notice too the magenta tinge....

Would I be right in thinking Your examples are 3200k lighting ?

It may have been 3200K, and if not, then very close. I can't remembers now.
I noticed the the sensor grid pattern disappears completely when I play back the clips in full screen (CTRL-F), even on the worst offenders, so maybe it is an issue in post.

I will still try to render out an image to be %100 sure, and post the results.

I uploaded a few stills from the renders. The sensor grid issue isn't visible anymore, thanks to Adam and JB's tips. Thanks, guys.
