Insuring Gear

PostFri Feb 08, 2013 6:05 pm

Does anyone have any advice on insuring camera gear? I've never owned expensive enough gear to require this. When my BMCC gear arrives my total investment will be just north of $6,000.

Also, I'm Canadian, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

I carry gear & liability insurance from Travelers. It's the policy they offer for small photography businesses (e.g.: not a "production company" with employees). Travelers calls it their "Store Pac" policy. Costs about $500 per year, covers up to $25K of my own or rented gear, and includes $2M liability coverage. You can increase the coverage amounts for a reasonable increase in the premium.

I suspect insurance companies in Canada may offer something similar.

Cheers.

There may be something similar to this in Canada.

My renters insurance from USAA insures my equipment from theft, damage, and loss. The nice part is that the coverage extends beyond my apartment, in the event that something should happen on location, in my car, in the airport, etc.

Thanks for posting this info.. My homeowners (state farm) will not insure my gear.. I'll definitely check into Travelers and see if I can get my cameras/gear insured!

Jim, check with your home insurance provider as they may cover camera and gear even when not within your home (but they might limit that to non-professionals).
