Compressed RAW - recording time on SSD

PostTue Apr 16, 2013 9:02 pm

Will compressed Raw be coming to the BMCC?

If so, approximately how many minutes would fit onto a 240GB SSD?

Lastly, how different is the compressed RAW format to "regular" RAW?

Thanks

last we heard the compression was around 2.5:1 and 1.5:1 i believe.

4K uncompressed RAW would be about 16MB/frame

if 240GB is about 30min of uncompressed 2.5K RAW @ 24p

then at most you are looking at around 23.5 minutes @24p which is not bad and the SanDisk's should still work with those data rates, which is their goal.

So compressed RAW means less recording time?

Surely this should be the opposite?

Those number are not official and anything/everything can change in the next two months.

The reason for the difference you note is 4K compared to 2.5K.

We will probably see the compressed CDNG come to the BMCC, but he is referring to the BM4K.

Anything, nothing has been confirmed/released as of yet.

whoops, thought I read BMPC.

compressed 2.5K Raw would give you up to 2.5 times the record time (if its 2.5:1 compression) so instead of 30 minutes you are looking at around 75 minutes

but yes the compression rate is still up n the air
