BMCC as Stills Camera

Firmware update that will allow the camera to shoot raw and compressed stills will be awesome. For me this will be very nice feature, what do you think guys, BMD?

Milen, the camera is already a stills camera... it shoots 24-30 stills per second and stores each still image as a DNG file.

Considering that;
-> the camera is supposed to be a professional motion camera and it doesn't even have VU meters,
-> BMD has made it clear that it is to be considered a Cine camera - hence no delete, etc.
-> and that the camera already shoots stills as part of it's normal cinema functions

it's highly unlikely that they'd implement dedicated stills functionality.

Yea just stick your timelapse mode to a slow as possible, hit rec then stop recording.

Stills on the 2.5K and the PC would also be a little low on the resolution size... when compared to the umpteen megapixel shots coming from even entry level vDSLRs.

I was wondering about taking stills from movies too. I think for that the 4K camera would be the way to go, as that's 8 megapixels. Whereas the BMCC is 3.3 megapixels and the BMPCC is 2 megapixels. However if you're just posting photos online, those would be fine at the moment too.

Videos with movement often look more natural and sharper if you have a bit of motion blur in them, as opposed to a series of perfectly sharp stills which can produce a 'strange' look. So it might be a tricky balance to get a cinema looking film plus sharp stills (without motion blur).

Has anyone extracted a lot of stills from their films? How do they come out?

Yes I've used a still from a short film we are currently in post production with, it works fine as an image on its own too.

this was my point, I know it's shoots multiple stills per second, we've just finished 2 weeks of RAW shooting. My point is that, probably it's not that difficult to be made and it's pretty convenient, especially when scouting for locations. I was never interested into the mega pixel mania, but BMCC DR, that's another matter. I would love to be able to use it by grabbing a quick still, for sharing, grading, or what ever. RED is also a cinema camera, but it has stills function and it's quite used by pros.

As long as you're not looking for stills to print big, exporting still frames from RAW video should work quite well. While lacking the resolution for a 16x24 print, it still has the picture and color quality to look stunning, whether the image is moving or not.
