Tips for shooting outdoors

Does anyone have any tips or links to good discussions about shooting RAW on a sunny day? I've been spoiled over the years by things such as built in NDs and in studio shoots and would just like to hear your guys input about shooting outdoors RAW to achieve the smoothest looking image.

Also any suggestions about things to purchase would be greatly appreciated. As of now I got a pretty bare bones kit (camera, external battery, cine lenses) which I am looking to build up.

Mattebox and NDIR filters. I like the MB to shade the lens/filters from any stray light. also if you can get the front mattes, all the better.

I know all the different types of NDs. But what is better for general use (like using a 50mm lens).

A .6 or .9? Do variables give bad results? Most people tend to hate them-from what I read anyways.

Also any preference of the threaded filters vs 4x4s? I do have a matte box designed for 4x4s thats been collecting dust over the years....could be a good time to pull it out!

4x4 would probably be nicer, but they are a lot more money!

I hear you on that. Thinking about trading in the old 7D after I got a harsh reminder of why I should have prepped for outdoor.

4x4s would be good for on the go though. I always use Tiffen filter, but are they optimal for the BMCC?

I've used ND .8 without IR and there were no problems and color shifts.
