Is it just me, or Pocket Cam has indie filmmaker written all over it?

I can see it in the tone, the texture, the fiber of the images. I actually like it better when it's ungraded. Or not as saturated.

Gritty. Gritty as hell. But beautiful.

downloaded the files, It has a lot more control than the horrid H.264 I'm used to on my canon. It grades really nicely when done well, but yeh it is grainy as hell! not sure why.

Thanks for that Mr Brawley, and Tom for putting it up here. Good to finally see what the cam actually produces.

The footage looks quite pleasing considering its ungraded. Quite a bit of noise in places; high ISO? Also there is what looks banding on the jacket of the guy pressing the traffic light camera. Is this a result of the player (VLC & QuickTime for me) selecting some weird range from the YUV data when converting to screen color-space?

Vids looks very good otherwise; detailed colors.

That's probably the impact of the slow Olympus lens (it's f/4).

Great!..Thanks!

I did a quick film look test in FCPX.

The shot has a BG overexpose ( no easy to fix) and too much forced in shadows but I can see the possibilities just with ProRes.

Was that done just using the built in tools in FCPX? Have you tried the open beta of my plugin? You can do quite a lot by using the controls in that as a start point, and then FCPX's colour board to finesse.

That's the reason for the crazy traffic.

I see. Well in the meantime, while Dropbox is throwing a fit, the original footage can be found here. Somebody uploaded it to that public folder filled with Blackmagic-related video.

Just for fun, this is a quick attempt (I don't claim to be a colourist) done in FCP X using my plugin and then tweaking with the built in FCP X colour board. No secondaries.

That guy's face is becomming popular quickly...

By the way: did you notice that metadata? Obviously John was in a hurry when shooting these examples. I'm quite sure that there are neither grebes, pelicans, cormorants, long-legged wading birds nor waterfowl in this take... :-)

A big thank-you to John Brawley for shooting and sharing these BMPCC pocket cam sample ProRes files.

Hopefully BMD will make arrangements to host them ASAP so you don't have to take time out from your busy shooting schedule.

Cheers!

Hi, my first post here. Like some of you, although I find the footage to be a pleasure to grade, most of the shots seem grainy. I'm not sure if I would qualify them as noisy but definitely grainy, probably on higher ISO settings, dont know. When I look at some of your graded images, they seem clean, do you use noise reduction of some sorts? I use Resolve Lite which does not include de-noising features. Hope somebody can shed some light, it would be greatly appreciated. Planning on letting go of my 60D and move to the Pocket, sure hope this 'grain' thing is due to my mis-handling of the file  .

Noise

PostWed Aug 07, 2013 12:43 pm

Those of you seeing noise are also seeming those that haven't corrected or experienced LOG encoded footage before.

Like the BMCC the LOG files look very flat and the blacks are lifted.

The BMD philosophy is also to do no in-camera correction like a lot of other cameras do under the hood. This means no sharpening or noise reduction either.

You're getting what the sensor can give you warts and all. You need to grade it to see what the footage really is like and you need a little experince to do this or to use one of the excellent BMD luts that are now around like Nicks.

That's why once graded, the noise tends to disappear into the blacks.

When applying video mode in camera does that do the same processing in relation to noise processing etc.?

Or does that just boost colors?

No.

Just a very rudimentary "LUT* that a lot of people don't like.

John,
I experimented more with different LUTs and grades in Resolve, I see what you were referring too, I admit it gets better, a lot better. I'm used to grade H264 out of a 60D, often time on much higher ISO than I like it to be. I'm not used on pushing the image that much without it turning into a random pixel soup. BTW, thank you for making all these shots available! :D

Obviously I can't speak for BMD on this, but I think full 3D LUT support is unlikely. That's not the way in camera processing generally works. None of the other digital cinema cameras support 3D LUTs either. What some of them do is support varying levels of tweaking of the 1D LUTs which control the monitoring output. Something similar may be possible in future in Blackmagic cameras.

Thanks in any case, looks interesting ;)

PS:
Perhaps could be more interesting if you can add some plugin than can split each color for separate. Like "selective color" in PS. Inclusive Blacks, neutrals and whites.

There are other dedicated colour correction plugins out there, and my plugin is not trying to compete with those. It's really intended for normalising an image by correcting exposure and white balance, and applying a standard LUT.

Not to say a wouldn't ever consider the idea of writing a more comprehensive grading plugin, but that would be a different thing.
