What field monitor do you use/recommend with the BMCC?

PostSun Aug 11, 2013 10:32 pm

I was thinking about getting the SmallHD AC7-SDI for $899 because it comes with frame guide. With all the accessories needed to properly operate it though it comes out to $1300.
http://www.smallhd.com/products/ac7/buy.html

Any other options?

I see the AtomosSamurai HD-SDI Hard Disk Recorder is currently $995 at B&H and has 10bit color.

What are you guys using? I was thinking of going into a Walmart or Best Buy and just buy a small HD monitor to take with me and plug in, for indoor shoots. But I don't believe any of them have SDI-HD ports on them, usually just HDMI.

You can use a simple HDMI monitor-- even one from Best Buy by using this type of convertor:

I use it with my Marshall HDMI monitor.

Which Marshall HDMI monitor do you have? I got one of those converters and it refuses to work with my Marshall CT7 unless I use 25p or 29.97 :(

Gidday All
We use and recommend an Alphatron EVF for monitoring focusing, exposure,
works great! best out there at the moment!

also use a ikan Vx9 field monitor works ok... not quite as sharp and well build as the small hd or newer marshalls
though bang for your buck ....its workable .....the screen is less reflective than the small hd though you still need the optional sunshade. SDi and HDMI inputs and outs.

TVLogic VFM 856WP - hands down.
G3 SDI in and out no converters needed.
Also gives you audio meters, frame guides, waveform, false color, andwhatnot.

Not a big fan of SmallHD after using the AC7 Oled on last shoot, the DP is supposed to be better but it´s expensive compared to the Odyssey7 http://www.convergent-design.com/Products/Odyssey7.aspx . I´m for sure going to get one of thoose, just got to make up my mind if I will get the 7 or 7Q. TVLogic is great and kind of standard when renting equipment and there is a good reason for that. Most cheap chinese monitors are not really good field monitors but can be used for framing and focusing.

I'm worried about the sun damaging the EVF. I remember at this years NAB they announced they now install a filter to make it so you almost have to be trying to burn the screen on purpose for sun damage. Are there any other models with that type of filter?

Anybody got some experience with F&V products? Seems like the most 'reasonable' low budget hd-sdi monitor?

I use the cineroid with retina display, and it's perfect for the BMCC.

I've heard the panel in the DP7 pro is better than the 7Q, do you know?
I like the menu and layout in the SmallHD more than the 7Q so far, but if the 7Q has custom LUTs first maybe i'll go with that. Will see. :)

This is not first hand information as I have never used the Odyssey but from what I´ve heard it´s the same panel (but they don´t look the same just because of that). The 7 is just to cheap and loaded with features to ignore for me, onboard monitor with built in LUT support for $1295 is a steal. The recording options of the 7Q with licenses that also can be rented is something that I can use, not perhaps so much on my own shoots but for the ones I´m assisting. Cheaper option to offer the company than renting a codex or XR. I´m going to try it out before I buy but it looks really promising.

One thing I have to give SmallHD is that they are durable. The one we had was used as a directors monitor and it was dropped several times but it never gave us any problem.
