resolution of SDI out on BMC?

PostThu May 09, 2013 1:29 pm

is the SDI out 1080p when shooting 23.98?

I'm looking at broadcasting live thru SDI output. But need to make sure it'll match specs with other cameras.

my DP is hoping to use BMC, but wants 720p on all cameras. I'm not sure if BMC can be adjusted to output 720p at 23.98?

From the BMCC manual: -

"The BNC port provides 3G-SDI output, letting you monitor on set or send video to an SDI router or switcher.
The SDI output always outputs 10-bit 4:2:2 high definition 1920 x 1080 video, regardless of whether you are
recording RAW 2.5K, ProRes or DNxHD to your SSD. When the camera is set to record 25p or 29.97p with
SDI Overlays switched off, the SDI output will be 1080i50 and 1080i59.94 respectively, so that you can send
the SDI output to switchers.
When SDI Overlays are on, the SDI output also shows action safe and title safe frame guides as well as the
camera status strip."

does it mean the resolution u get in your external monitor is always 1920 1080 even if your external monitor can't support that high definition?

Many (but not all) monitors are able to convert a 1920 x 1080 input to the lower resolution of their display. So, for example, a monitor with a native 720p LCD panel might be able to convert a 1080p input to 720p for display. But that's a function of the monitor & its specs. It has nothing to do with the BMCC.

The BMCC's HD-SDI output is always either 1080p or 1080i when running the current 1.3 firmware. With previous firmware the cam only output 1080p. It doesn't matter what recording mode the BMCC is set to, the BMCC HD-SDI is always 1920 x 1080.

Hi Peter,

I am about to receive my 2.5k and was very sure about using the camera with a Ninja external recorder until I read about the v1.3.1 update. Apparently that update now outputs 1080i (Psf) as you pointed out, but the ninja can only record progressive signals. You mentioned that on v1.3 update, the BMCC always "either outputs 1080p or 1080i" Is there an option? Assuming there is no way to switch between the two, will a SDI-HDMI convertor able to convert 1080i to p signal?

Thanks
