ND problem/solutions

PostWed Aug 21, 2013 9:32 pm

Although I think the BMCC line of cameras are fascinating cameras I think there are some quirks that need to be addressed (as they have already in this forum but I'm just putting this out there). The combination of high ISO sensitivity and neutral density filters don't always get along and can give us IR pollution along with other issues. Lowering ISO causes us to lose dynamic range so what's left to do about it? Well, I'm sure BlackMagic will not take the Aaton route to apply a multi-slot shutter into their cameras (although that would be awesome) but how about doing something similar to what Arri is doing with their Alexa classic and that is utilizing the internal filter module to interchange external ND filters behind the lens and inside of the lens mount. Unless there's already a 3rd party out there already providing a solution such as this, I think it can be done for the BMCC's. Anyone's thoughts on this?

Cost. That's all it comes down to.

Adding such functionality might sound simple and easy to implement but it adds to the cost. Cost to develop, cost of additional parts, cost of manufacture, cost of support (more parts to break).
