Can't get timecode read from audio

PostTue Aug 27, 2013 11:43 pm

I'm trying what John Brawley does to read timecode from audio track with BMDCC and it's not working. What am I doing wrong:

I record timecode to audio track using Ambient Tiny Lockit -- I tried using line in on the BMDCC but couldn't hear anything so switch to Mic In. Interestingly, I heard the timecode loudly at first and then it fades away.

I then import into Resolve, put on Timeline in Conform, right-click and choose "Update Timecode from Audio LTC" but nothing changes. No timecode update.

I tried exporting and it just sets timecode to 1:00:00 (which I don't have chosen in Deliver).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,

Which version of the Da Vinci Resolve software are you using? I know it was fixed the read audio buig in the last 2 versions of Resolve.

Resolve 9.1.5 works with read audio timecode so if you are using below it will not work. I am surprised the read audio timecode fix was not in the read me for Da Vinci Resolve 9.1.5.

I just updated to 9.1.6. I hope it didn't break again. Anyone have a link to 9.1.5? (And can I go back a version?)

Thanks.

OK, I just went back to 9.1.5 and still not working. Are the steps I took above correct? What else can I try?

Thanks.

If you hear it and it goes away, then your'e probably overloading the audio input of the camera. It has a function where it will shut down the audio so perhaps you're recording it too hot ?

Thanks John! I thought that as well, but tried lower feed and still doesn't work.

One thought (which may be totally wrong as I'm new to all of this timecode stuff): the Tiny Lockit may only send a signal to jam timecode but is it possible it may not be continuous?

OK, solved the problem. Must have been a bad cable (or high impedence or something): I tried a new cable today (lemo to XLR) and got a good, hot signal and it worked. But, have to be careful not to clip or it won't.

Edit: I think the original cable (lemo to 3.5mm) has built-in attenuation but must be too much -- even at full output from the Ambient and full vol on BMDCC the signal was too low.

Since the BMCC has 1/4" audio inputs, maybe there was a problem with the converter you added to the 3.5mm end. The 3.5mm connector would work presumably on the BMPCC.
