PWM BMMCC Record/Stop Controller by RADIOPROEKTOR

PostWed Aug 07, 2019 5:06 pm

Let me introduce PWM Record/Stop Controller for BMMCC by RADIOPROEKTOR. This project was started long time ago in parallel with unfinished BMMCC handle grip. Controller have only one simple latching button switch and controls camera Record/Stop. Button switch is very comfortable and very soft to press. It uses PWM interface and compatible only with BMMCC (BMMSC doesn't have PWM interface). It uses 3.5mm TRS socket connection, so you can take any common 3.5mm TRS jack cable and plug it to BMMCC Expansion Box Module by RADIOPROEKTOR.
I successfully tested prototype over all this time and hope in near months i'll be ready to start small batch manufacture.

Controller body fits to common 15mm rod clamp, so you can use it with any existing 15mm rod clamp accessories and mount it anywhere on your rig.

Also here are some early attempts to pair it with SmallRig handle. Usable, but not perfect. Button switch feels slightly far from finger and in some hand positions not too comfortable to press:

So i ended up with controller mounted like this. Very easy to press by left hand in same position as you adjust focus of the lens. Also when controller mounted like this you don't need to unplug it every time when you attach and detach side handle.

Some people PM me and if it possible to make similar form factor LANC model, so i done some search and find company ELM Electronics who makes very special compact sized LANC chips. This one https://www.elmelectronics.com/ic/elm307/ probably should work and may fit into tiny controller body. I am not too in electronics but final circuit based on this chip looks very simple.
Here is also some advanced info and specs about "classic" LANC interface http://www.boehmel.de/lanc

There is plenty of well documented projects for LANC control, just search LANC and Arduino.

Is there any Arduino board small enough to fit inside 15mm rod? Also Arduino feels like overcomplicated to use for one single LANC command. ELM chip costs $5 and seems only needs few resistors and capacitor to send proper LANC Record/Stop signal.

Why not build it inside the handle? There is also prety small arduin boards. LANC reguires also some other electronics to interface it with the camera.

It is unclear for me what exactly the ELM does. Does it have all needed electronics? How is the connection of it? It might be the simplest solution if you just want the rec button. However looking it now, it does not seem to use LANC.

Ps. On BMD micro cameras you can connect the button directly if I remember correctly, no electronics needed.

Check ELM307 data sheet https://www.elmelectronics.com/wp-conte ... M307DS.pdf I am near noob level in electronics, but from what i see this ELP chip is sort of specially designed to output LANC Record/Stop signal. They got other similar custom designed chips like time lapse triggers and so on.
Controller with simple PWM button will work only with BMMCC.
It was just the idea to make similar controller with LANC interface for other cameras.

I did not spend much time with that document, but do not find LANC mentioned on that.

ELM307 – Camera Control
Trigger your still (film or digital) camera from various sources including lightning (using an AM radio), a light beam, an alarm circuit or a momentary switch. A single pushbutton is used for power on/off as well as mode switching, keeping the interface simple.

On the link it says "The ELM303 and the ELM624 both use the LANC standard to talk to camcorders and some still cameras, while the ELM307 was created with only still cameras in mind." So you should look into the two first.

Seems i need to connect manufacturer and specify how it works. Maybe they could provide some working circuit...

Here are some photos of final product in custom made CNC machined rod.

Also i am testing another PWM button kit for installation inside Tilta follow Focus rod:

This is all for BMMCC only. No LANC version.

Dmitry, are you selling the Wooden handgrip shown? Never mind, it is a SmallRig grip. Have you come up with a better bracket for the remote start/stop to work with this grip?
Thanks
Cheers

Denny, this Record/Stop Controller is mostly useful for mounting on cage and it is really works perfect there. I don't have any new mounting brackets, so you still need some rod clamp mount for it.

But if you need handle with button directly under the finger, probably the best way to go is new low cost LANC handle released by Camvate some months ago:

P.S. To be honest i am rather skeptical about button placement on handle directly under the finger, because in many situations it don't allow to hold handle well.
