Camera Firmware Question

PostSat Jul 24, 2021 4:37 am

Does doing a factory reset on your camera also reset your firmware? Asking because I just installed the firmware and wanted to restore my settings to their default. Thanks.

Factory reset reset settings only, when you load firmare automatically camera do a factory reset. The only way to go back with firmware is to install older camera software on computer and connect camera, software detect different firmware and allow you to upgrade or downgrade firmware.

Hi, do you know whether is possible to downgrade my BMPCC4K firmware 7.5 to 6.1 (considering that I bought it in late 2018 with dng recording included)? Is it safe for the camera? thank you very much

if you can is simple:
- remove actual camera tools from your computer
- download old camera tools
- install older, connect camera
- software ask you to upgrade (downgrade) camera, and voilà.

i did it many times, to do some test between dng and braw shooting.
this is a good thing of all bmd cameras, if camera born with older firmware you can downgrade and upgrade everytime you want.

remember that :
- firmware update must do with power supply, not with battery only
- you should never disconnect cable or touch camera during firmware uploading
_ you should work with internet disconnected (if you use window, windows decide to upgrade and reboot also if you have a tool working, i friend of mine brick a camera thanks to this windows feature).

Thank you carlomacchiavello I will try it later and let you know. I was a bit afraid because I read somewhere that there was the risk to crash the camera while downgrading.

Yes you are right, was my mistake, I have the 7.3.
I bought the camera in December 2018 so it should work.

I just did the downgrade now (from 7.3 to 6.1) and it worked perfectly. Thank you again for your tips :)

what is your reason for moving from BRAW back to cinemaDNG?

Re: Camera Firmware Question

Recently I discovered the possibility to go back to old firmware so my next step is to test the two formats cDNG and BRAW.
When BRAW came out I immediately wanted to switch to it because of its lighter but high quality files. I released many projects shot in BRAW and nobody complained for that (promo video, short film, music video). I never thought to go back to cDNG until few days ago when - talking to a colleague of mine - I discovered the possibility for old version BMPCC4K owners to go back to cDNG firmware.
So now I would like to test it back and taking a decision.
Probably I will definitive choose BRAW because it’s enough good for the projects I’m working on.
What about you? Do you work in cDNG or BRAW?

the current BRAW version has little in common with the first one released.

I use BRAW exclusively because I was annoyed for years about cinemaDNG
with the original BMPCC and then mostly only recorded in prores.

I haven’t given it any thought, but tome it’s more complicated than comparing CinemaDNG to BRAW; it’s comparing using a camera with 6.1 firmware HUD and a camera with 7.3 features. I want to keep the recent upgrade.
