Ursa Mini 12K Data Rates

PostMon Oct 11, 2021 3:58 am

I've just bought an Ursa Mini Pro 12K to join a 4.6K G2 on a doco I'm shooting.

I was a bit shocked to find that the data rates on the 12K, downsampled to 4K are roughly double that of the G2 at the same compression ratio.

On the G2 I'm getting about an hour on a 256GB CFast card @ 5:1 BRAW / 24fps / 4K DCI
On the 12K, I'm getting half that time with the same settings.

I know this information is available in the tech specs, it just didn't cross my mind to look, as I assumed data rates at the same res, codec & frame rate would be more or less identical between cameras.

I guess what I'm really wondering is, can I shoot at a higher compression ratio (e.g. 12:1) on the 12K, and end up with the same quality as shooting 5:1 on the G2. The data rates work out roughly the same, so does that mean the quality should be roughly the same?

Dean, I created a data Rate calc sheet which should make it easier to compare data rates of different cameras:

Yeah you can even shoot at 18/1 and barely tell the difference. They were designed to be visually indistinguishable :)

Also check out Robs data sheet. It's incredibly useful.

12k newer sensor, with double of data in raw.
Common sensor GGBR info from Bayer structure
12k sensor WWWRGB From RGB + W

Thank you very much, and sorry for the delayed response!

I'm not sure if I'm using your sheet incorrectly, but when I compare the calculations done on the sheet, E.g.:

UMP 12K
BRAW 5:1
24FPS
4K DCI

Your sheet gives me a data rate of 62 MB/s

But if I look at the specs on the Blackmagic website, they say that the above settings should have a data rate of 161 MB/s. And in my own use I also see this higher data rate

This is very interesting. Do you know if there is an article anywhere that goes in to more depth on this topic?

1. If you want to replicate the exact results from BMDs specs, you have to set the Byte conversion in my sheet to 1000 instead of 1024

2. The specs for 4k DCI on BMDs website must be an error. If you look at the specs further down below it says:

4K Super 16 - 4096 x 2160
at 240 frames per second.

Blackmagic RAW 5:1 - 648 MB/s

So when you get 648 MB/s at 240 fps, then at 24fps you must get 1/10 which is 65 MB/s and exactly what my calc sheet shows.

And for

8K Full Sensor - 8192 x 4320
at 24 frames per second.

Blackmagic RAW 5:1 - 257 MB/s

That is four times the data of 4k DCI.
So 257 MB/s / 4 = 64 MB/s
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I remember presentation of Grant about this newer sensor, but I don’t know if there is a in-depth article about this new tech.
Sorry
