Blackmagic Video Assist 3G vs 6G vs 12G: Which would you buy

PostSat Jan 22, 2022 7:48 am

I am currently using an Atomos Shinobi for monitoring but need a monitor with a recording function to record visuals from a device that has a 1080p HDMI output. I am only recording indoors so brightness is not much of an issue. I can get the monitors used for the prices below. I am leaning towards the 3G or 12G for BRAW recording. The 12G would let me record to my BMPCC6K SSDs but is quite pricey.

Which one would you choose and why?
    Video Assist 6G (300€)
    1920x1080 display
    10 bit 4:2:2 1080p/60 ProRes SD recording
    Video Assist 3G (400€)
    1920 x 1200 300 Nits display
    10 bit 4:2:2 1080p/60 BRAW SD recording
    Video Assist 12G (570€)
    1920 x 1080 2500 Nits display
    10 bit 4:2:2 2160p/60 BRAW SSD recording
Any help is highly appreciated!

I was thinking I could record BRAW from any source and was planning to use the VA only to record a device that creates visuals using HDMI. But I guess then there is no reason for choosing the G3 over the G6 right?

And for recording HD 1080p, the VA3G is perfect, no need to spend more $ for the 12G, if not recording 4K.
